in some muslim populated areas. It was only a matter of time and that time is fast approaching. The Labour party used to be able to count on the muslim vote but that is changing.

Burnley was celebrating its football club securing promotion to the Premier League when PoliticsHome visited earlier this week. However, away from the jubilation is a story of deprivation that has long affected post-industrial parts of Lancashire, with government statistics showing Burnley to have record numbers of young people living in poverty. According to Rob Ford, author and politics professor at the University of Manchester, the "general level of discontent in the Muslim communities is very high". Then there is the ongoing war in Gaza, which Ford told PoliticsHome had been a "lightning rod" issue, prompting Muslim voters to move away from Labour over its response to the conflict. One Labour MP told PoliticsHome that their party's focus on combating Reform risks ignoring the electoral threat posed by candidates in these areas. “People in the party are putting their focus on Reform, which I get, but also at the expense of this threat,” they said, adding, "these are real extremists." Maheen Kamran, 18, an aspiring medical student, is standing as an independent for Burnley Central East. She was motivated to enter politics by the war in Gaza, where she believes a “genocide” is taking place. Kamran told PoliticsHome she wanted to improve school standards, public cleanliness and encourage public spaces to end “free mixing” between men and women. “There’s a big aspect of free mixing,” she said. “Muslim women aren’t really comfortable with being involved with Muslim men. I'm sure we can have segregated areas, segregated gyms, where Muslim women don't have to sacrifice their health.”
Khalid Mahmood, the former Labour MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, who lost the seat to a pro-Gaza independent, said his party increasingly appears to be accommodating "Islamist" interests and needed to stand up against it. “While some Islamist organisations continue to pressure the government under the guise of combating Islamophobia, their demands are rarely about genuine inclusion. They are political and often incompatible with liberal democratic values,” he told PoliticsHome.

BBC earlier
Labour has lost a handful of former strongholds to independent candidates campaigning on pro-Gaza platforms. In one of the biggest shocks of the night, shadow minister Jonathan Ashworth lost his Leicester South seat, which had a majority of more than 22,000. The party's vote is down on average by 23 points in seats where 20% or more of the population identify as Muslim. In Ilford North, shadow health secretary Wes Streeting was among those who saw his majority slashed - from more than 9,000 to 528. in areas with a high proportion of Muslim voters the party performed badly. Labour has lost five seats with large Muslim populations - four to independents and one to the Conservatives. In Leicester South, Shockat Adam declared "this is for Gaza" as he won the seat by 979 votes. The constituency, where around 30% of the electorate are Muslim, has been held by Mr Ashworth for 13 years. Meanwhile, independent candidates who made the conflict in Gaza central to their campaign won in Dewsbury and Batley, as well as Blackburn, which both previously had healthy Labour majorities.

“headed for a caliphate.”

Your posts are good only to point and laugh at. And I mean all of them.

Britain has an official church, as does Norway, so technically they are theocracies, but in practice they are much less theocracies than USA. USA technically can't be a theocracy because of its constitution, but that is just a piece of paper nowadays. USA is a full-blown Christian Nationalist Trumpocracy. If British voters are voting for independents, then that is often a good thing, as provides vitality to a democracy.

Trumptastic!

British? lol!

British? lol!
You know that only citizens are permitted to run and/or vote in these elections, right?

Most of the Muslims in Burnley (and across the UK) are the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great-great-grand children of immigrants who arrived in the UK in the 1950s from Pakistan and Bangladesh, at the invitation of the British Government who were seeking to resolve the post-war labour shortage.

It takes a special kind of vile racism to suggest that we shouldn't call someone born a British Citizen, whose parents and grandparents were also born British Citizens, "British".

If someone said that Colin Powell was American, would you say "American? lol!"?

Would you dare say it to his face?

Take your racist bullshit, and shove it up your arse.

The OP content does not support the OP title: 5 constituencies does not a caliphate make.
Not even 5 constituencies; These are local government elections, so we are talking about county and city councils, which have very limited powers.

They can decide to spend more money on repairing roads, and less on garbage collection (or vice-versa), but declaring a theocracy would rather exceed their authority, and the Home Office would take a dim view of any attempt to do so.

USA is a full-blown Christian Nationalist Trumpocracy.
Really? Not enough Trump-themed threads around here that you have to hijack this one?

Not necessarily. In this case the "independents" are a bunch of Islamists. Like Maheen Kamran, who wants to end free mixing between men and women. How very progressive of her!

No, it's a pointed comment on the fact that Christian supremacy is truly a threat to the USA. By comparison, a few Muslims getting elected in Great Britain is peanuts.

It's like getting worked up about Muslim music playing in Minneapolis, while Christian Domininists take over the federal government.

As predicted, the Labour party (and to a certain extent the Tories, lost big time to Reform. But Labour also were beaten by their former allies, muslims.

Pro-Palestinian campaigners have continued to tear chunks out of Labour's voter base at the local elections. A slew of candidates motivated by the Gaza crisis have been elected in council contests across England. Following voting on Thursday, Maheen Kamran has been elected to Lancashire County Council for the Burnley Central East division. The 18-year-old said she was motivated to enter politics by the 'genocide' in Gaza and wants to encourage public spaces to end 'free mixing' between men and women. She will be joined on Lancashire County Council by Usman Arif, who won the Burnley North East division as an independent candidate. He quit Labour over the party's position on the Middle East and regularly posts about the Gaza conflict on Facebook. The elections for Lancashire County Council also saw success for Azhar Ali in the Nelson East division. It comes a little more than a year after Mr Ali was kicked out of Labour over anti-Semitism.

Daily Mail

By the way, Maheen Kamran, the 18 year old who wants men and women segregated, won with <40% of the vote.

Election results for Burnley Central East

Electing somebody should require a majority. Either traditional or instant runoff.
For things like legislative bodies, proportional representation would be even better.

It's really fucked up that so many countries hang onto the medieval FPTP system that is not fit for the modern world.

They are not even trying to hide it any more.

‘Another Pakistan about to emerge in UK’: Scottish leader Anas Sarwar exhorts Pakistanis to ‘take power’ | Watch

Yahoo News said:
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar is facing a huge backlash after a video emerged showing him urging Pakistanis to seize control in local councils and parliaments, political parties, and countries and become more politically influential, a statement critics have condemned as deeply inappropriate, undemocratic, and advocating sectarianism.
In the video that has now gone viral, Sarwar is seen standing in front of a Pakistani flag and saying, “We will only truly get real power if we have more Pakistanis sitting in the council chambers and parliaments, but actually more Pakistanis and South Asians sitting in the corridors of power and making the decisions. The change is coming, and the days where our South Asian community is viewed as a vote bank or curry bank are well and truly gone.”

Oh look, Derec spreading neo-nazi propaganda. Probably the least surprising thing today.

The full video here. Only a rabid racist or Islamophobe would find anything concerning with this

It's not propaganda, "neo-nazi" or otherwise. Even The National confirms that he said it, they are just putting an islamophilic spin on it.

Example:
The National (Axulus' link) said:
“The days when South Asian communities get to decide, not just what school our children go to, but what they are taught in those schools is also coming.

The day is also coming when they also get to decide to end the free mixing of men and women, like Maheen Kamran, who just got elected, is demanding.

The selective editing and the framing is 100% neo-Nazi propaganda. You are just so used to it that you are blind to it. Read the article I listed that traces the origin of this gross racist garbage.

Did you watch the full video of his speech? It is only 4 minutes long. Definitely a derangement syndrome if you somehow see anything wrong with a fairly bland speech about the south asian community involvement with politics and the benefits that can bring to their community when representatives from that community get elected to political office.

I mean what children are taught in schools is something MAGA and the far right have been screaming about for decades now and using their political power to control and influence. In fact all political groups and communities are concerned about it. Why is it only ok when MAGA, white Christians and other far right individuals talk about deciding what their children are taught in public schools? And suddenly when a south asian community wants the same thing for their children you start clutching your pearls? Take a good look in the mirror and think about why you are having such an extremist reaction to something relatively bland and benign?

Is that before or after she changes which day of the week the recycleables bin gets emptied?

County councillors don't get asked about "the free mixing of men and women".

Not even in Lancashire.

That's exactly what the righties did here. I don't remember you complaining about it.

Not even in Lancashire.
I understand this particular Islamist got elected (with a minority of the vote btw) to a seat on the local government.
But they do have public facilities run by the county in Lancashire? For instance, public pools? And she may well try to impose gender segregation on those.
