FT. MYERS, FL -- The message from Governor DeSantis was clear, Floridians needed to rebuild their lives. Insurance payments were expected to begin shortly, so that homes located in areas prone to flooding and damage from hurricanes could be rebuilt in time before the next hurricane strikes.

Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 storm, followed generally along the same path as Hurricane Charlie, however, Ian was a much wider storm and brought much more water. Precipitation was a primary destructive force in this storm, with some river gauges reaching flow rates that were nearly 10 times their previous record.

With waters still not receding, Floridians were looking forward to rebuilding the lives they lost in a place susceptible to devastation and destruction. And there is a hurry. Rapid storm intensification has been notable in the past 15 or so years. The main culprit is the ocean temperature, especially the Gulf of Mexico. It is currently being debated as to the impact of climate change on the Gulf's temperature, but if these conditions continue to either remain elevated or get worse, that chance of another major storm running over Ft. Myers is possible, meaning, these homes need to be rebuilt before floodwaters can swamp them into unusable mosquito infested boxes.... again.
