France's 35 hour work week??

All told, French workers put in an average of 39.5 hours a week, just under the eurozone average of 40.9 hours a week, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Maybe in the new math 39.5 <= 35 but certainly not when I went to school.

Wait a minute. How do we know this average isn't really the median? I mean if the data is muddled, how can anyone intelligibly discuss its implications?

The French 35 hour workweek is not a rigid standard. There is "flexibility" or "loopholes" in the law which permit workweeks to exceed 35 hours (http://www.triplet.com/50-10_employment/50-20_workingtime.asp).

How do you know they're not getting paid 4.5 hours of overtime pay? That would still be a 35 hour week standard just like America has a 40 standard even if people work longer but get time and a half.

If someone increases their productivity and can do more in less time, why not pay the person for less hours.

Work smarter, not harder...then your bosses realize your job can be cut, since the work can be done in less hours than a full-time person and you get laid off...or your workload increases.

The latter happened to a bunch of postal workers. Their boss told them if they finished their runs early, they could leave work early while still getting paid a full day's work. They hustled and got their deliveries done and were going home a couple of hours early each day.

So after the time study was completed - unbeknownst to the postal carriers - their work loads were increased since it was obvious if they worked really hard, they could deliver more.

Never trust management when they offer such incentives.
