In mechanical design the traditional method of tolerancing the position of a hole was in rectangular coordinates. Define a tolerance zone in xy coordinates recitative to a reference point. There are several manufacturing problems with rectangular dimension.

Someone came up with simple mathematical alternative. a circular tolerance zone.

A simple problem is a plate with say two pins and a plate with holes that fits over the pins. How do you tolerance the positions of the holes and pins to ensure that the two parts always mate?

It becomes more complicated when tolerating assembles in three dimensions.

It was so significant that it became the international standard for mechanical drawings.
