Very grim prediction from George Conway. Essentially, he predicts that the events will play out as follows to the recent lawbreaking of the Trump administration:
The federal courts will issue rulings to stop the recent illegal actions.
Trump will defy the court orders and tell his people to ignore them. Anyone standing up and defying Trump will be purged.
The way federal courts enforce their orders is to hold people in contempt for violating them, and then either fining them or ordering the federal marshals to arrest them.
But the federal marshals are part of the executive branch. Trump can order them to stand down and not carry out the court order.
Trump already hates the courts and thinks they are corrupt. Why would he go along with enforcing the court orders that go against what he approves of?
Any potential criminal liability facing his minions, he can simply pardon before he leaves office.
What will stop this chain of events from playing out? The constitutional remedy is for congress to impeach and convict, but things will have to completely fall apart before they ever get to that point, at which time Trump may simply refuse to leave.
Well worth the watch, goes much more in depth with Sarah Longwell trying to poke holes in the prediction:
