Can't speak for Merchant or Chapman, but I don't think Aretha Franklin or Joni Mitchell need to be given their due. Mitchell is considered one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century, irrespective of gender.

I understand that, but I wanted to post a thread of appreciation for their contributions to ease a little of our everyday burdens with sweet memorable music.

I will throw in Yumi Arai (Yumi Matsutoya after marriage) a Japanese singer writer who has had some of her songs used in some of Miyazaki's anime movies.




Her is voice is nice but not flowery or too sweet if that makes sense.

Troy by Sinead O'Connor is crazy scary in a great way.
 


Gives mopey (in a good way) US/UK singers of the 70's a serious challenger for top of the line talent.
