Back when the ACA was passed, the GOP lined up against that. Thanks to right wing media hysteria and propaganda, ACA became rather unpopular. ACA had a populatity of only 35% vs 50% unfavorable at its peak in late 2014. But as the benefits of ACA began to trickle down into the consciousness of America this began to change. ACA's unfavorability rating is now down to 42% and it's favoritability rating is now 49%.
The GOP saw this as a great wedge issue and made ACA repeal a cornerstone of it's platform and as a major wedge issue to win elections. But now it is a rather smelly dead cat hung around the GOP's neck. Health care policy is now a major issue among American voters, and the GOP is on the wrong side of that issue. Prying themselves loose from the tar baby of repealing ACA, every word of it, is going to take quite some doing.
This issue is not going away and will almost surely play a big role in the 2020 election. So this issue is going to be interesting to watch.
