The award normally goes to novels, but for the first time, a comic book has been nominated. The above video discusses why it deserved to be nominated.
You know how conservatives and libertarians love to torment the victims of mass shootings by accusing them of being "crisis actors" and sending them anonymous death threats? This comic book is about that, and about what happens to real, feeling, non-psychopath human beings when subjected to this kind of tragedy. The conspiracy theories and anonymous death threats become a second trauma as bad as the original trauma.
The book makes unusual art choices to drive home what the various characters are going through.
Sigh. I apologize for calling people unfeeling bastards just because they torment grieving families. That was out of line.

Trigger Warning
The novel being discussed suggests that something conservatives and libertarians (who are completely different, but happen to take the same positions on many of the same issues using arguments that are worded the same way) is less than an ideal and perfect response, which could make right wingers feel less like special princess snowflakes and hurt their feewings. You unfeeling bastards should watch it anyway, because the shit you do in the wake of these tragedies is not the behavior of decent, civilized human beings. It is not OK to send anonymous death threats to people who lose family members or even young children in tragedies that you helped to create by pushing for government policies that would result in as many mass shootings as possible.
