If that be remotely true then I am astounded that it is easier to buy a gun than open a bank account.

It used to be possible here almost like this but with one key difference: You could use your CCW permit. That proved that you had passed the background check. Otherwise they had to do a background check before handing over the gun. Ammo and mags are unrestricted.
