Blood from a stone.

It all started 8 years ago when Gawker posted a story with the line, “Peter Thiel is totally gay,..." people.”

The name Peter Thiel may not be familiar to everybody, but he is one of those Silicon Valley billionaires who has not wanted to become famous like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. For some reason, Gawker thought his sexual orientation was newsworthy and wrote a story about it. One doesn't get to be a billionaire by being stupid, and Peter just waited for the right moment.

The moment came when Hulk Hogan, world famous close contact acrobat, had sex with the wife of a friend, and was unaware the bedroom was wired for video. One might wonder why a man would focus security cameras on his own bed, but really, it doesn't take too much imagination, does it?

Gawker got their hands on the video and posted it online. The Hulk did something totally out of character for him. After a lifetime of seeking attention for any reason, suddenly his feelings were hurt by this blatant invasion of his privacy. This mystified a lot of people, until the verdict of $110 million dollars was announced. It turned out, Peter Theil(remember him?) had paid the Hulk's legal bill. It was a gamble that paid off rather well.

Details of how the $110M will be divided are not known. If Gawker survives the bankruptcy, they may write a story about it.

They should do like Trump and just dissolve the company and start an exact replica, may I present... Hawker!

That verdict was yet another proof that US tort laws need serious reform. If anything, the publicity helped Hulk Hogan, not hurt him.

I agree the payout amount was absurd. The "damage" done to Hogan wasn't that large financially. It isn't like Hogan is very revered. However, fuck Gawker. Those type of companies exist for what purpose?

On the contrary, the Hulk is a very sensitive person who suffered great emotional damage from the experience. The worse part of all of this was the many comments that none of it was real he was faking it.

I hate it when I hear people calling for tort reform, based solely on their imagination of how monitory damages are calculated.

If Hulk makes $100M dollars for appearing in a movie, and someone releases an illegally acquired movie with him in it, then a $100M reward is quite reasonable, no?

The famous McDonalds Hot Coffee case... about $1M paid for spilling coffee? Yes. The person suffered 3rd degree burns, needed multiple skin graft surgeries, and eventually DIED as a result of the burns that were suffered... all this after multiple complaints were sent about this particular McDonalds having completely unreasonably hot coffee.. and receving memos from corporate headquarters ordering them to lower the setting on their burners.. .which they ignored.
Why $1M? Because McDonalds grosses about that much in coffee sales alone in ONE DAY. So this person who was basically murdered by gross negligence was awarded 1 days worth of sales of the product that killed her.

Whenever you hear cries of 'tort reform', dig deeper. follow the money. You are hearing it from either the chamber of commerce, or blind followers.
