I started reading 'A History of Christianity' by Paul Johnson and it's hilarious

Yea it's a good book, although pretty dense and academic. I can't think of many people who'd want to read it other than those who are serious about history and interested in the subject.

I've never read another book on the same subject.

I'm having a little trouble telling the difference in your summary between your commentary and the author's.
This sounds like a cozy story, but this reformation of religion was actually quite violent.

Is this Johnson or you?

Most generalizations are mine unless I explicitly mention Johnson's name. In your quote I was the one calling the period violent, in lieu of actually describing the violence that Johnson mentions in the work.

Summarizing the book is actually pretty difficult. I'm leaving out a ton of nuance to paint the over-arching picture.
