Yea it's a good book, although pretty dense and academic. I can't think of many people who'd want to read it other than those who are serious about history and interested in the subject.
Most generalizations are mine unless I explicitly mention Johnson's name. In your quote I was the one calling the period violent, in lieu of actually describing the violence that Johnson mentions in the work.
Summarizing the book is actually pretty difficult. I'm leaving out a ton of nuance to paint the over-arching picture.
