Computer makers have seldom offered much variety in the colors of their wares, but Apple is an exception.

The original iMac was offered first in "Bondi Blue", then in several other colors. Why Bondi? Bondi Beach | Sydney, Australia - sydney.com

Here are the colors, from the Wikipedia pages, and translated to HSL with HEX to HSL | Html Colors That was done so as to see how much variety there was in hues.

iMac G3, All 13 Colors of iMac – 512 Pixels
  • Bondi Blue - #178a9c - hsl(188, 74%, 35%)
  • Blueberry - #069ac0 - hsl(192, 94%, 39%)
  • Grape - #64638f - hsl(241, 18%, 47%)
  • Tangerine - #ff9f1b - hsl(35, 100%, 55%)
  • Lime - #02ac3f - hsl(142, 98%, 34%)
  • Strawberry - #bf005d - hsl(331, 100%, 37%)
  • Graphite - #535e62 - hsl(196, 8%, 35%)
  • Indigo - #19377f - hsl(222, 67%, 30%)
  • Ruby - #8d0020 - hsl(346, 100%, 28%)
  • Sage - #075a4a - hsl(168, 86%, 19%)
  • Snow - (white)
  • Blue Dalmatian - (pattern: bondi-blue with white spots)
  • Flower Power - (pattern: 60s-style flowers)
Blueberry is nearly identical to Bondi Blue, but I think that it was chosen because of its fruit theme.

Apple then reverted to a limited color palette, first white, then bare aluminum.

But  iMac (Apple silicon) is like the original iMacs.

I can't find much on individual  iPad models, however, at least not in Wikipedia, though some recent iPad models come in multiple colors.

I'd copied and pasted the color values from the page source for the color swatches, so I can have something more objective than the names. Green is sometimes light green and sometimes dark green, for instance. Here's a page that shows hex color values: HEX to HSL | Html Colors

IBM sold its 1970's mainframes in two colors, Red and Blue.

I've previously hinted at an interesting diagnostic bug on an IBM mainframe at Coca Cola headquarters in Atlanta. The punchline: When Coca Cola bought IBM equipment, the salesman never bothered to ask what color they wanted!

Back in the day getting a green phosphor CRT display at work instead of the usual black and white was a big deal.

The number of colors or shades depends on the display and the graphics controller. It depends on the number of bits.

I epect companies like Apple do consumer focus groups to see what people like or prefer.

Original RGB.

As a side notey ou can get RGB discrete LEDs . It consists of separate RGB LEDs, vary current in each diode to change colors.
RGB LED

RGB LED means red, blue and green LEDs. RGB LED products combine these three colors to produce over 16 million hues of light. Note that not all colors are possible. Some colors are “outside” the triangle formed by the RGB LEDs. Also, pigment colors such as brown or pink are difficult, or impossible, to achieve.

Back in the day, Red, Green and Yellow LEDs were all available, but Blue LEDs didn't exist until years later.

For some reason inventors liked to bounce ideas off of me. One proposed a 3-color LED display that would be RGY instead of RGB. I didn't encourage him.

Olive = yellowish green

I searched for sales numbers for different colors of iMacs and the like, but I couldn't find any. Which colors sell the best and which sell the worst?

This might be a dumb, unrelated question, but why doesn't my inkjet printer follow the RGB convention to create colors? Instead its cyan, magenta and yellow?

That's standard for printers. They use cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks because printers work in subtractive fashion rather than in additive fashion. Cyan = green + blue, magenta = red + blue, yellow = red + green, so cyan + magenta -> blue, cyan + yellow -> green, magenta + yellow -> red.

This is called CMYK color space: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, blacK.

Is there any CMYK alternative that can produce more saturated colors on prints? - Quora
The answers mentioned professional print shops that use additional ink colors, like orange and green.

Yes, the older displays were indeed monochrome, like the older analog TV's. They were often blue or yellow. We still have lots of monochrome displays where anything fancier would be overdesigning, like in digital clocks and microwave ovens.
