Michigan recently ruled that votes up to 2 weeks after the election must be counted.

People that remember the 2000, remember the equal protection argument from the W lawyers who insisted that because each county judged votes differently, a recount was just cray cray. That shit won 5-4. No seriously... SCOTUS opened up their decision by saying "This shit can't be used for other cases because it is such bullshit."

My memory is foggy, that might just be a paraphrase.

Imagine, Trump going to the courts, demanding all results tossed out because Wisconsin had one standard and Michigan had another. Yeah, it's a bullshit argument, but... well... we've been there before.

Why do you not have one standard across the whole country?

Because we effectively invented a Federalized Democracy. We aimed at restricting the power of the Centralized Government. The first attempt through the Articles of Confederation failed miserably. Then the Constitution was created and they greatly increased the power of the Federal Government, but still retained a great deal of power to the states, such as how Senators were selected, how electoral votes were done with. And this probably made more sense back them. Running things in Georgia probably was different than in Delaware in the late 1700s.

Sadly and thankfully, the Constitution is more difficult to change than underwear that has super glued to your rear. So are stuck with a paranoid Constitution that still provides a lot of oversight to the States, even when that no longer makes as much sense for the case of elections. And this flaw that Trump could use to contest the election with his red hat sycophants and retain power.
