Pope Francis has sent his blessing to a lesbian author of children's books dealing with same-sex families, wishing her and her wife well in their work, it emerged on Friday.

As Vatican officials scrambled to clarify that the message was simply a standard courtesy which did not signal any change in Church teaching on the subject, the author told AFP she had been pleasantly surprised to have received such a positive response.

Francesca Pardi, who writes and publishes books such as "Why you have two mummies", wrote to Francis in June after the publishing company she runs with her wife came under fire from Christian groups.
. . .

In his message, the pope wished the two women "ever more fruitful work in the service of young generations and in spreading authentic human and Christian values."

So new stories seem to come out all the time about the pope's stance on gay rights. The latest one appears to be him giving his blessing to a lesbian author. Every time the pope does this, the rest of the Vatican goes into a tizzy trying to "clarify" the position of the church. It actually reminds me a little of Joe Biden's blunder on gay rights that forced Obama's hand on the issue.

I don't expect the Catholic Church to just change its belief system, and the Vatican is extremely conservative, no doubt about it. I'm just wondering about the Pope himself. Does he genuinely support gay rights (and perhaps cannot come out and say so directly for fear of backlash), or is he trying to sugarcoat a conservative position? How can we tell the difference? What say you?

Has the Pope actually supported Gay RIGHTS, or has he just been visibly supportive of gays?

I think the Pope is working hard to change the way the public views the Church, not so much to change the Church itself.

Or maybe he just likes to watch the tizzy?
