Is that fair?

You could only quote a part of one sentence? I don't think that is fair.

To whom? To the man, or the child?

And whose wellbeing should be the focus of a custody case? Your country's laws and society make it nearly impossible for a woman to raise a child alone, and I assume this near impossiblity becomes an absolute impossibilty for a "scarlet women" whose reputation and connection to her birth family is now irreparably severed. Then your courts forbade her, despite many attempts, to place responsibility for the child on the irresponsible lover. So who else does she or the child have? Ultimately, someone must provide for the child's care.

There is no such law. Father's name is not required in school or on passport. Hundreds of women are raising their children on their own, with or without the support of their family.
No they did not. Financial responsibility of a child born out of marriage devolves upon the boilogical father.
The laws have changed and have moved with time.

That is why I am surprised. The biological father of the child should be responsible for the expenses.

I guess one's view of marriage colors the judgment of fairness in this case. To me, marriage is a partnership and you try to support your spouse in every aspect as best you can, To me, that means it is fair to support the child while married to the spouse.
