Israel will retaliate if the Palestinians take further unilateral steps in pursuit of statehood.

Israel has no more or less right to exist tan any her stet. Israel came into existence through military aggression and usurping other people's land.

As somebody said, if you legitimize the actions of the Jews, you can not delegitimatize the actions of Palestinians.

The initial causation of the troubles today was Jews unilaterally declaring a state taking Arab land in the process.

They declared the state unilaterally because it was obvious that talking wasn't going to work. And I don't have a problem with the majority of the occupants of a land making a state on that land.

It is a fact the Palestinians resumed seeking diplomatic actions after the Israelis balked at fulfilling their part of the initial agreements, namely the release of 104 prisoners. These deals are not one-sided. If the Israelis refuse to carry out their commitments, the Palestinians are under no obligation to carry out theirs.

What you're missing is that they didn't release the prisoners because the Palestinians weren't upholding their side of things. We see the same thing over and over--history is always started with the Israeli actions, not the Palestinian ones.

'...In the latest development, Israeliofficials are quoted as saying that debt payments would be deductedfrom tax transfers routinely received by the PA.

...

They are being bastards who know they can be SOBs without any meaningful retaliation.

So Israel has no right to collect on debt?

Talking isn't getting the Palestinians their state, either. And apparently you believe unilateral action is the way to go in the West Bank and Gaza, since the majority of the occupants are Palestinians who want to be out from under Israeli rule. So why did you start this thread? Was it to criticize Israel for making threats?

You'll have to be more specific. What specific failure on the part of the Palestinians meant they weren't upholding their part of the agreement that they would hold off on seeking international recognition of a Palestinian state in exchange for a moratorium on settlement building and the release of 104 Palestinian prisoners?

Did someone make that claim?

Again you make excuses for the Jews who unilaterally declared a state taking land owned and occupied byothers, but demonze the Palestinians for attempting the same actions for the same reasons.

Declaring a state and excluding all but a specific group is called ethnic cleansing.

Jewish state? Why have a Jewish state? What reason do we, if we are atheists have for supporting a Jewish state? Do people have an automatic license on the basis of a bullshit religion to seize property of others and form a religious state? I am sure some of those displaced Arabs were Christian...not that that should matter. Supposing the area were populated by atheists. Would it still be okay to kick them out and establish a Jewish state? I am opposed to every Jewish state, every Muslim state, every Christian state. Our constitution demands a secular state. Ours isn't one. It has a strong Christian tint and a lot of de facto Christian bias in its laws. When the religious start their bullshit pogroms where will you be without a secular state. We should support that only for every country...unless you enjoy the fruits of discrimination.

I have long thought that Palestinians should do whatever they can to gain the moral high ground in the eyes of the world. And taking steps peacefully to look to be recognized as a state at the UN or elsewhere is a great leap in that direction and I applaud it. More and more Israel is losing the perceived moral high ground and more and more of the world is seeing that. How long can a nation built on holocaust guilt survive if it loses the moral high ground?

Except the Palestinians don't have the moral high ground. Rather, they have a PR effort that the world press generally supports because it sells more papers than the truth would.
