The NRA, relative to other organizations, doesn't really give U.S. politicians that much money.

It's about $9,900 to the most supportive Congress people and Senators.

So why do conservative politicians cater to the NRA? According to a few articles, it seems they're afraid of the NRA and the ilk that support it. I'd link articles but there's everything from left wing propaganda, to well, the NRA and the bizarre strain of blogger who believes that revolution is right around the corner.

At any rate, are conservative politicians afraid of the monster they've created? Have they cultivated a semi-functional constituency that has become so overly paranoid that they really would ban together and start gunning down the cops, the National Guard, etc. if the 2nd AM was read sensibly by a new SCOTUS? And look at Obama's well meaning but utterly ineffective leadership on the issue. Personally, I have great admiration for the man, but he has refused to address the issue forcefully. OTOH, with a GOP/Tea Billy Congress and Senate, he can't really do anything anyway.

What is it that both left and right and centrist politicians are so afraid of?

Is there really that much of a threat to the security of the nation from private gun owners?
