Jakarta's Christian governor Ahok found guilty in Islam blasphemy trial

On the surface, this seems pretty bad for those who believe in secular liberal ideals like free speech, minority rights, freedom of religion, non-criminalization of political differences, and separation of church and state.
Strangely, I don't see it as bad for those that actually believe in the actual separation of church and state.
A state blasphemy trial is really the opposite of secular, at least as I understand the term.

So, no. Not bad. They do things different over there, but it has absolutely no reflection on how we do, or want to do, it here.

I'm going to have to disagree with that. It's really no different than oversensitive pricks wanting to ban words like bossy, fuck or nigger.

And what are we to do about them?

Cry ourselves to sleep?

This is a political discussion forum. So we have discussions about political events.

Some of us even manage to discuss the event that is the topic of the thread.

You seem to have a lot of trouble here.

What are we to do about this?

Cry ourselves to sleep?

Pretend we are superior in some way?

A women in the US was arrested for laughing at a member of the government. We have our own problems without hand ringing over problems we can do nothing about.

Can a mod please move all the "why are we talking about this" comments to a new catch-all "You shouldn't be talking about this" titled thread?

That way those of us on a secular atheist forum who think a significant world government jailing an opposition leader on a trumped up blasphemy charge actually is worth talking about can carry on.

The British actor Stephen Fry is known as many things: a witty television presenter, a roguish Twitter personality and an outspoken atheist. Over the weekend, the Irish authorities considered whether to add another label to the list: alleged blasphemer.

The Irish police opened an investigation into whether remarks Mr. Fry made in a 2015 television interview — saying that God, if he existed at all, was a selfish maniac who deserved neither respect nor praise — had run afoul of a controversial blasphemy law enacted in 2009.

The inquiry didn’t last long. The authorities said on Monday night that no charges would be filed against Mr. Fry. But the news that they had even pursued the complaint to begin with set off an outpouring of bemusement and anger in Ireland, which has been grappling with its deeply conservative Catholic history.

NYT

It was never likely to come to anything but the fact it was even raised is amazing.

So instead of answering questions you howl at the moon.

I can see your interest in discussing things.

One thing many people discuss when they see things they don't like is: What can we do about it?

Those with a desire for something productive that is.

Yeah, but really, what good does discussing them when nothing ever changes and there is no solutions?

Well, there are solutions, but not ones the rich and stupid will accept just now. The world constantly changes, however, and if we don't keep pointing to those solutions, the scumbags will so totally brainwash the mugs as to make them impossible, so that the human race dies out.

Maybe you're at the wrong forum.

I've considered that. Maybe you are too.

It all depends on what those solutions.

I balk at any solutions that increases government power and increases more legislation.

End capitalism entirely, and make workers' control world-wide. If we don't stop this insane system soon, we're all dead.

Capitalism rocks!

Your approach guarantees we are all dead.

Worker control can't do the big projects without which the human race is doomed to a resource depletion collapse.
