January 3rd 2027

The Democrats won this battle bigly, but the war was already won by the GOP at least for the foreseeable future, and that can extend out if Alito and Thomas retire very soon.
Well...Democrats were paying attention in 2020, when Mitch McConnell refused to even hold hearings for any Obama nominee for over a year since "the voice of the people" should prevail. Then, in 2024, with less than 2 weeks before an election - another justice is seated. So unless either of them dies, then they won't be retiring. Karma can be a bitch.

Now that the predicted blue wave seems to have materialized, I’m interested in y’all’s thoughts on J3.

If this had not been an historic ass-whooping, I think a violent insurrection attempt was in store. But IMO it would take more courage than the right has ever shown, to try to fly in the face of such a unified message as was sent last night. So I am at a loss as to what to expect.

Will Rethuglicans put away the ARs and play nice like good little boys and girls, or attempt more scurrilous subterfuge, knowing that this time consequences could be severe and fast, and pardons might be hard to come by?
If Trump was more than a greedy, stupid, senile old weenie, I’d expect him to try to get the military to install him as Leader for Life. But he’s not that guy.
I half expect him to put himself in exile, and live out his days in a palace on Russia’s Black Sea.
Thoughts?
The ass-whooping (which was very much expected) was because of Trump not being Trump anymore. He promised a transparent government and then took us through the Epstein debacle. Then he bought us a war with Iran after promising to be a peace president. He brought us higher inflation and higher gas prices after promising the opposite. Just why Trump decided to implode himself is still a mystery to me it is as though Israel grabbed Trump by the pussy.

The young people of America are not so concerned about politics as they are being able to purchase a home and afford prices so they can start a family. Starting a war for Israel was not their answer. Most younger people today are part of the lower middle class. And this clases is not only the uneducated or unskilled anymore, it features young people with high college debt struggling with their life. These are populous issues Trump has proven not to represent anymore. Hence the blue wipe out.

I predict this will be a temporary blue wave unless the Democrats actually do something productive (which they will fail). They will fail because they aren't going to do anything meaningful with staying out of war, healthcare costs, inflation, or corruption. Instead they will do business as usual with impeachments going no where. Grid lock any possible efforts that might actually help the American middle class. And more insider stock trading for themselves.

This will cause the pendulum will swing the other way on the next vote cycle for something similar to what Trump was. They will vote populous whether it is blue or red. Repeat and rinse.

It looks like the upstart Senator elects are already planning a metaphorical Night of Long Knives.
Well Derec you can always keep your hopes up. Gotta cling to something after this drubbing …
But that wasn’t the subject of the thread.
I don’t really fear a metaphorical genocide of Rethuglicans, a metaphorical destruction of the Sacred Order of Southern Bigotry, a metaphorical crucifixion of Donald Trump or any of your other fantasy fears.
I was concerned that there could be insufficient margin of victory to quell the rabid right’s kneejerk violent response to another loss, as has become their habit.

Never mind, Derec. It’s not even close. Looks like ‘Murka all a sudden done got WOKE. So damn woke, that even the croon of your whining can’t put them back to sleep.

I am all for investigations. Starting with those covering for the Epstein files. Aiding pedophiles to block prosecutions are criminal acts. I am all for impeachments, starting with Clarence Thomas. A judge accepting bribes is a criminal.

lol! I will take “way too late for that” for a thousand, Alex.
No goddam way the surviving ‘pugs are going to fall on Trump’s sword at this point.
That lame horse left the barn on a killer trailer a couple months ago. If they try to cram another one through in the next 8 weeks, the Dems will expand the Court as required, and any surviving ‘pugs will support it.
If there is to remain a viable Republican Party by the end of Trump’s term, they are going to have to turn down the deceit, lies and McConnell-style mischief, like, yesterday or sooner.
I do expect a fascist phoenix to rise from the ashes, but not in the next few weeks.

Alito will retire and be replaced before the Democrats take over. There’s no mechanism for them to stall until January. Thomas has apparently decided that he can’t afford to give up the bribes, so he’ll hang around.

Speaking of knives out...

‘Knives out’ at Pentagon after unpopular Iran war dooms GOP in midterms. Though President Donald Trump has continued to support Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Republicans’ electoral drubbing leaves him and other key military leaders vulnerable, officials say.

Senior Pentagon officials were confronted Wednesday by how the unpopular Iran war spelled disaster for the Trump administration in the midterm elections, as Democrats seized power in Congress and questions arose about whether President Donald Trump will hold someone accountable for the GOP’s shellacking.

Democrats immediately set their sights on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, with whom they have clashed repeatedly over the past two years. But those close to the Trump administration questioned whether the president instead might dismiss Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, or Adm. Brad Cooper, who has overseen the war.

Hegseth has served as a top salesman for the Iran war, which the Trump administration and Israel initiated in February. He has publicly berated lawmakers and journalists who have scrutinized the conflict’s shifting strategic objectives, cost and lack of congressional authorization; he falsely claimed Iran’s military has been destroyed for “years to come”; and he declared total victory over Tehran after a few weeks of fighting. But months later, hostilities endure and a peace deal remains elusive.
As usual, it's someone else's fault.

The court will be expanded and/or some justice(s) impeached forthwith, should the Trump regime try such fuckery.
That’s why I don’t think the pugs will believe it propitious at this point to further fly in the face of overwhelming public sentiment.

Impeachment of judges would get nowhere, and distract from the real issues.

If Alito retires today, they’ll nominate someone next week. They’ll put up with all the blowback to put another fascist on the court. The only obstacle would be if a couple republicans grew a conscience and repeatedly voted against the nominees, which is about as likely me becoming queen of England.

Congress sets the Court’s size by statute; the Constitution establishes the Supreme Court but does not specify how many justices it must have.

If they have sufficient congressional control they can do it in 8 weeks. If not, they can do it in 2 years.

Trump would have to sign , which he obviously wouldn’t do. So it would have to wait two years.

That's all absolutely Trump being the Trump he always has been. The next promise he keeps will be the first.

He hasn't changed one iota.

What has changed is that you are no longer deluding yourself that he is something he never was.

Congratulations. We had lost hope that you would ever notice the blindingly obvious fact that Trump is a lying, corrupt, cheat, and will do and say anything to enrich himself and his family, with zero regard for America, or for anyone outside his immediate clique.

This is not new. You just didn't want to believe it when he appeared to be winning, presumably because you felt good about backing a winner.

Trump is an amoral and unprincipled person. That hasn't changed. What changed was that his policies were hurting people in a very obvious fashion (and data centers).
He promised a transparent government and then took us through the Epstein debacle.
He promised transparency in Term 1, that didn't happen either. Oh, he also tried to steal an election too.

Anymore? You misspelled "ever".

Qatar gave Trump a fucking 747 jet! Trump was handed a BS publicly traded company with a large amount of cash to house his boutique social media company that generates a couple million in revenue a year. This was before he was elected in November 2024. And the shares in that fraud are a tiny fraction of what they opened as. And let's not forget the crypto. Boss Tweed is thinking, whoa there, that is outrageous!
Instead they will do business as usual with impeachments going no where. Grid lock any possible efforts that might actually help the American middle class. And more insider stock trading for themselves.
Moore Coulter... but you aren't a conservative, so I don't think that applies. Nothing under W, Obama, or Biden remotely comes close to being a fraction of the wanton fraud of Trump, in just the past 30 months! But you gotta you and whine about the establishment, not the fraud who you somehow mistook as being the guy that'd clean the swamp.

Expansion and impeachment isn't happening. Please move on. But yeah, Thomas and Alito could resign next week. And they'd Barrett up a replacement or two. Hopefully they both do a Ginsburg. I've got to think that Alito likes being the person tearing up Constitutional law. It could be harder for him to leave.

Expansion and impeachment isn't happening.
Not unless there’s more fuckery.
I’m surprised it’s not front and center, unless there are a few ‘pugs who can feel the wind shifting.
If there is/was a plan to jam another fascist bozo onto the court in the next few weeks, with holidays in process and very few working days left, it’s probably on hold now. The pugs who survived the midterm purge might hesitate to stand in the way of impeachments, and the threshold for expansion is high, but it’s not impossible.
All it would take would be public rage directed at Thomas and Alito, and some congresscritters would fold.

Not to me. Why do you say that?
He is a Jew who is pro-Israel. Note that Abdulrahman suggested CvH, who is an opponent of Israel in the Senate.
I see a lot of rejection of Schumer from the more liberal side of the party.
Leftist, not liberal.
They feel that Schumer doesn't fight hard enough.
Schumer is a realist and there is precious little Senate Dems could do in the minority under Trump presidency, but under Biden he supported his agenda even as Biden drifted to the left and proposed things like the Spendapalooza.
