JERUSALEM — A Jerusalem court on Sunday sentenced a radical ultra-Orthodox Israeli Jew who fatally stabbed a teenage girl at a gay pride parade last year to life in prison plus 31 years.

Jerusalem's District Court had already convicted Yishai Schlissel for the murder of 16-year-old Shira Banki and the attempted murder of seven others.

We talked about this event here last year, until a certain someone derailed the thread with his victim-blaming homophobia and the thread was locked.

Enjoy your stay-cation, Mr. Schlissel. Jehovah must be so very, very proud of you. You certainly won't have to encounter any homosexual activities in prison, no sir!

Too bad. There should be a prison for gay-bashers that plays gay porn 24/7.

There is. It's called prison. ;)

Life in prison plus 31 years. That's excessive. Life in prison plus 15 years for certain folks and life in prison plus 20 years for other folks, fine. But 16 years or 11 years extra is an abuse of power. Someone (other than me) needs to rectify this tragedy.

:slowclap: Nice one.

A life sentence in Israel means 30 years, but can be reduced to 20 years with good behavior (someone can verify if they can confirm this is now after 15 years) For the 31 years parole can be after half the term. So the estimate is 30 or 35'ish years.

A life sentence in English means until you die. No wonder my comprehension is lacking. I don't speak Isreal legalese.

A lot of countries give a specified term and the possibility of parole after a certain period of time.

For Israel there is information which conflicts with my earlier understanding as I understood this to be 30 years but can be paroled after 15 years. There were some changes in the law which I am not up to date on.

As a matter of tradition, the President reduces almost all life sentences to a determinate sentence, usually within the range of 20-30 years, with the possibility of parole after one-third of that sentence is served

No it doesn't. In America, a "life sentence" is 80 years in prison before one is eligible for parole. eligibility for parole can be further accelerated by "good behavior" and possibly other things.

If you want someone to never get out of prison (in the US), they need multiple life sentences or "life + X years", like was done with this guy.
