Kobe Bryant Killed In A Helicopter Crash In California

 
 
 
Shit. I just read his thirteen year old daughter was with him.
 
Shocking, I had to quadruple check the headline. Nine people on the flight. It was very foggy over there, I hope the crash was from something unforeseeable, and not because of poor judgment.

My favorite memory of Kobe.
 
Yeah, I really didn't feel it like when Dan Wheldon crashed and was killed, but hearing about his teenaged daughter dying does amp up the tragedy.

Aryton Senna and Dan Weldon were killed while racing, Scott Brayton while training in the race car. But Alan Kulwiki and Davey Allison (NASCAR champs) died like Bryant... in a aircraft crash.

Gravity sucks and is responsible for way too many deaths and injuries.

Granted, without gravity, we'd just bleed to death, right?
 
LA is in mourning at the death of basketball legend Kobe. It’s a shocking thing to happen not just to him but all the people onboard. I don’t follow basketball but Kobe and the Lakers were a source of pride for the city of LA and his death has hit the city like an earthquake. Everyone I have spoken to today has been shocked by this news.

The details of that case are rather damning, and far worse than those of recent cases where people have lost their entire career and reputation. Basically, if #metoo had begun 16 years earlier, Kobe's career and reputation would look a whole lot different.
 
I hate celebrity rape cases. No one ever admits to them, and often they are hard to prosecute. Victims of rape who come forward are scorned. And you have those occasional high profile liars which have been used as foils by defense lawyers and misogynists alike.

And of course, celebrities have god like status... especially athletes who have been hand given so much and certainly many benefited from a blind eye here and there. They feel like gods because we treat them as such. Of course, not all athletes are rapists, but the atmosphere that cultures create for them sure the heck gray lines for what they should and shouldn't expect from other people. It takes a good guiding light to help them on that path. And of course, their victims, often never say a word, because why even try.

That sound you heard? That was the point of ruby's post, flying way WAY over your head.
 
It's looking like spatial disorientation of the pilot because of visibility may have been the cause.

In the last minute or two, after realizing he was too close to the ground, he did a steep climb and then suddenly a steep descent, presumably because of disorientation at one point.

As the helicopter rapidly rose into the clouds in a “zoom climb,” Lawrence said, the pilot could have become spatially disoriented as he peered from the helicopter to get his bearings, a condition involving the inner ear that can result in the inability to tell up from down. In some instances, pilots trying to level their aircraft have wound up “punching the nose over” and sending it plummeting into the ground.

“Spatial disorientation can happen really, really quick,” said Lawrence, a seasoned accident investigator, noting that pilots are trained to react by relying on their instrument readings.

“The only way you live is to pay attention to your instruments,” Lawrence said.

It’s also possible that the helicopter experienced a mechanical malfunction that resulted in the pilot’s loss of control, he said.

That's a fair point but Kobe's circumstances are very similar to what happened to Mike Tyson and Tyson was jailed.
