Hard to believe that so many people ADMIRE naked avarice. Even harder to believe that they want to vote for someone - as President - who knows nothing about anything except screwing people.

If he wins, I will have a place in Canada and one in Mexico before 2018. Assuming that I can screw enough people out of enough money in the interim...

I'm going to Hawaii. It may still be in the US, but fuck it.

Been there, done that. Used to spend as much time as possible on Kauai... turned out that "as much time as possible" was about 6-8 weeks at a time before island fever sets in. So I'd go back to Colorado, and a few weeks later I'd want to be back on Kauai. That gets expensive! And I hate flying these days, so...

Look, Trump's a dick, but this is a lot of BS. Trump has to charge his campaign for that shit or he'd be in violation of campaign finance laws. His home is also a private club, probably lists it that way for tax purposes, but nonetheless his campaign has to pay the going rate for all these things, his plane, his golf facilities, his offices, anything he uses for his campaign. Maddow thinks he's gone through this for $6 million? That's chump change for Trump.

Yeah, the dude certainly a dick, but as you say, this doesn't seem particularly devious. The idea that a man with an ego like Trump's doesn't actually want to be President and actually wants to make money from campaigning is silly on its face.

It's not like he isn't avaricious enough to do it. He pocketed around $5 million from the Trump University setup by committing fraud, so why not this time too?

And we should definitely avoid propagating the "Trump is a billionaire" lie without proof. There's no real evidence that $6 million isn't a significant fraction of his net worth - or possibly even exceeding his liquid assets.

The reason it looks shady (and politics is perception, as the saying goes) is that he's paying himself to host his own events. That's something which no other candidate has ever been able to do. He can schedule campaign events at his own hotels, resorts, casinos, and golf courses and it looks weird because we've never had a candidate that owned hotels, resorts, etc.

If I were in the Clinton camp, I'd be using this against him. It isn't illegal, but paying yourself to host yourself in a hotel where most of your blue collar voters can't afford to stay is a bad look for a populist.

I find it amazing that you would think this has any sort of chance of sticking to Trump as a negative - it is part of his persona to make himself seem like an uber-successful business man. Although some of his positions have been called populist, really, his persona is that of a strong-man.

Another reason it doesn't make sense: he has been very lax about soliciting campaign donations:

“He can either start writing checks and selling some buildings and golf courses or get on the phones and talk to donors. Big donors just don’t want to give money unless they have the opportunity to talk to the candidate, hear what your positions are. There’s just been a failure from start to finish on the fundraising side.”

Lisa Spies, a veteran GOP fundraising consultant, said she has been amazed at the lack of outreach from Trump.

“No donors that I deal with — and I deal with national Jewish and women donors — none of them has gotten a phone call. None. Not one,” Spies said. “To raise money, you have to ask for money. It’s that simple. Whether you ask for it by mail, whether you do phone calls, whether you do events, whether you have one-on-one meetings, you have to ask.”

Trump himself is using it...his speech today called out Clinton for making millions off speeches delivered to Wall Street. Trump - the billionaire, the ultimate New York insider - is trying to paint his opponent as rich and in bed with rich Wall Street bankers. Why? Because he understands that there is an undercurrent of animosity or even hatred among the electorate towards the "one percent." Towards ill-gotten gains. Towards rich people who got rich while the rest of the country struggled.

Trump is selling himself as a successful businessman, but the truth is he inherited his wealth, used his daddy's connections to get into the New York real estate market, and is more slimy than any Wall Street banker associated with Hillary. Critical to bursting his bubble is to destroy the narrative of him as a successful businessman who is also a man of the people. In an era where the rich got rich at the expense of everyone else, his status as a jet-setting billionaire might very well be his greatest weakness.

Well sure, whether or not there is anything wrong with it they should still call him on it. I'm sure he would just brag some more about how rich he is-which is wearing thin with a lot of people riding the fence.

That would be true, if the underlying assumptions are true.

1. Trump is actually as rich as he says he is.
2. Trump is actually a canny businessman
3. That this 6 million is all there is.

I think all or some of these assumptions are questionable. The first two have been amply questioned in mainstream discourse. This year, he's been averaging 1 million a month. There's five more months to go, and there were six months last year. Total 17 million. Second, its been revealed that his so called 'self financing' are actually just loans to his campaign. So he lends money to himself. I bet he is charging interest. Then there's the merchandising sales, and the publicity that can be cashed in on future projects. I've already heard talk about him wanting to start a Trump TV channel. Whether that's a good idea in the modern age is not the issue: in his slightly old fashioned mind, he's built up a following that would make such a thing profitable. He's certainly made a lot of money from self promotion in the past.

So you are correct, 6 million is chump change for a man who is as rich as Trump probably is. (even if he is not as rich as he says) But there is a lot more than 6 million dollars in this.

Is it? When I see Trump, the term Qarth comes to mind. Yes, he owns buildings, but there have been questions regarding his taxes and exemptions he has taken that implies he doesn't have nearly the level of income he implies and that a good deal of his "wealth" is via promotion of wealth, not actual liquid capital.

It is well established that he sucked some of his businesses dry (like the casinos that never made a profit), by forwarding himself cash from the ventures and then declaring bankruptcy, pretty much living high on money he never actually made or had to pay back.

That's a page out of Karl Rove's playbook. Figure out your biggest soft spot, then accuse your opponent of that very thing. "Hillary's not very religious. Hillary's cozy with Wall Street. Hillary has made money through shady dealings. Therefore, vote Trump."

It surprises me how often it works.

Yup. Reminds me of YECs telling people that evolution is a religion.

This story pretty much gives some credence to my theory of Trump being a place holder on the Repug side to guarantee Hillary's election.

If anyone defines slimy insider Wall Street doings is there a better poster child than Trumpy? Hillary isn't a patch to this guy. Interesting how some people think the opposite is true.
