He's an anarchist syndicalist, I believe, so I'd rather doubt he was much surprised by the fall of the Soviets, since that philosophy has always been opposed to Leninism.

Anyway, take Guatemala. There was no Soviet incursion. There was a relatively modest land reform trying to be passed, and the US toppled the government because it threatened the interests of the United Fruit Company. The United Fruit Company convinced the Eisenhower administration that Arbenz was going to join the Soviet bloc, but Arbenz was a nationalist to the core and wasn't going to simply be a pawn of the Soviets. The coup was led by the brothers John Foster Dulles and Allen Dulles, both of whom had major interests in United Fruit Company. I spit on the ground every time I walk into Dulles Airport.

We see a similar stupidity in the modern day, where any Arab dictator can simply declare that He Is Against Terrorism, and the US will, like pawns, do his dirty work for him in the name of the War on Terror.

Fundamentally, I think we just do not have a very savvy group of people leading us. It's a problem that you encounter when your public servants come from a relatively technocratic system and they have to deal with people who are raised in a more aristocratic system, where guile and misdirection play much more prominent roles in who gets to the top.

No Soviets in Brazil, or Chile, or Guatemala, or Nicaragua, or Haiti, or Mexico.

After the US launched an invasion (Bay of Pigs) the Cubans ran to the Soviets for defense.

After Castro came to the US and tried to gain US support.

It was a shock to the CIA. They had no idea it was going to happen.

As somebody said my sympathies are with anarchist ideas, not communist.

And the more I learn about the Spanish Anarchists it seems the real history was that the Anarchists were pretty much crushed by Communists before the Civil War even began.

I point to Anarchists in history. In Spain, for a while, there were huge areas working under "Anarchist principles". Orwell saw many many Anarchists.

I also point out Anarchist ideas about liberty.

Liberty is liberty from all coercive and illegitimate power structures, including structures created from individually controlled wealth. Not just the power of government which is many times a check on the power of wealth.

All power structures must justify their existence, even those created by wealth. None are self justifying.
