Mitch McConnell: making Election Day a federal holiday is a Democratic “power grab” - Vox
McConnell took to the Senate floor Wednesday to rail against HR 1, the sweeping anti-corruption proposal House Democrats have put forward as their first bill in the majority. Among many other measures, it proposes making Election Day a federal holiday and encourages private sector businesses to do the same.

McConnell, who calls the bill the “Democratic Politician Protection Act,” sees that as a “power grab.”

“Just what America needs, another paid holiday and a bunch of government workers being paid to go out and work ... [on Democratic] campaigns,” he snarked on the Senate floor. “This is the Democrat plan to restore democracy? ... A power grab.”
So making it easier to vote is a "power grab"???

So making it easier for "those people" to vote is a "power grab"???

Yep.

Free IDs, free polling booth transportation for everyone AND a national holiday to vote should be a good compromise.

Also, moving voting to a full weekend or a national holiday monday would be even better.

Good idea.

Let's move it to the Monday we celebrate Independence Day.

Voting, backyard barbecues, fireworks, and discounts on furniture all rolled into one! And if you have to work, at least you get holiday pay so win-win.

How can it be a power grab? I thought all those poor people didn't have jobs.

McConnell is scum like Trump is stupid, it never ends.

Actually McConnell and his ilk are just like the people who wrote our first voting laws. If you're poor, not white, wrong religion, etc., go fuck off because only white men with wealth and the proper pedigree should get to vote.

That is correct. Unfortunately he lacks one thing that those people had: foresight.
The constitution provides for the legal structure to adapt to changing desires of the electorate. Of course they couldn't anticipate that black people or really poor people would ever become enfranchised, but they did incorporate that possibility - wittingly or unwittingly - into the design that they produced. Bitch McConnell is dead set on forcing an oligarchic structure upon us that most currently enfranchised Americans don't want. So he tries to suppress the votes of those who don't want it. That is MANIFESTLY counter to the Founders' intent.

Maybe it could be rightfully argued that the Founders never intended the government they were designing to serve every goddam slave or landless illiterate that managed to crawl up on their shores (not that any Republican has the courage to say that straight up), but when it comes to defining what makes one an American, the horse has already left the barn. Mitch needs to wake up.

How have the Democrats exploited this?

It's transparent.

Making it hard to vote favors the Republicans where making it easy favors the Democrats.

If all eligible voters voted the Republican party would have shriveled up and died decades ago.

Voter caging, voter suppression, voter purges, voter discouragement, making it hard to vote, making registering to vote hard, inconvenient, and extreme gerrymandering, Power grab Republican style. May McConnell's butthurt be severe, deep, personal and ineffective in the end. May all this voter ratfucking be overthrown and wiped off the face of the Earth by the 2020 voting season.
