I like to see well made worlds even if the stories are not so good. What worlds are worth seeing in media?

I will put out a somewhat obscure anime film from 1987 called "Wings of Honneamise" that has so many detailed tweaks of a parallel world just breaking into the space age. Made in pre-bubble burst Japan they spent a ton on it and it shows. Only drawback for me is that I don't like the facial designs, they look kind of ugly.

There are a lot of major hitters not worth stating the obvious about. But, I would also like to say that Dark City was very good in the design.

It's almost criminal how underappreciated this film is.

My submission is The City of Lost Children:

City of Lost Children is proper. Haven't seen Wings of Honneamise. You probably know about Record of Lodoss War, if you're into that type of anime. Lodoss is very acid-friendly. I watched the box set ritualistically back in the day. I even had feelings for the female elf Deedlit, by the 10th episode. Everyone falls in love with Deelit. It just happens.

I was also going to mention Garm Wars. You need to see it.

I'd like to nominate Adventure Time for animated TV's great design and original world, complete with cosmology. http://adventuretime.wikia.com/wiki/Adventure_Time_with_Finn_and_Jake_Wiki

For movies, while I won't call it the best, I feel the need to bring more attention to the forgotten gem Mystery Men. The backdrop for this hilarious and ahead of its time superhero satire is the amazingly designed "Champion City" with its lovely buildings, its multi-language signage and business themes, and colorful housing and residents. To the Disco Room!

These two suggestions may be pushing the definition of "well realized" a bit, as both of them are cheesy as hell and hardly high quality. They do, however exist in a sprawling and detailed story universe with its own internal logic and lots of odd little rules.

First, there is Farscape, which was basically a vehicle for giving Henson And Associates something to do at a time when they weren't doing so well. It's cheesy and silly, but the rabbit hole goes very deep if you're into that sort of thing.

Then there is Lost Girl, which is even cheesier but not quite as silly. The show was built around a simple premise: to inject a sex-positive female character into the popular media. The main character likes having sex, enjoys having sex, and is never presented as villainous nor flawed for doing so. Again, highly detailed story universe with lots of rules if you're into that kind of thing.

Liked the first couple seasons of Lost Girl. They jumped the shark when they started with The Traveler. I left off at the season 4 finale, where the 'gates of hell' had opened up, spewing out damned souls.... and there are only 3 people fighting them off... and two of them are in the middle of a conversation and not fighting..... Might get around to season 5 eventually.

I probably stopped watching at the same point you did. If you can turn your brain off, it's a fun diversion, but mostly I think it's an example of a complicated backstory with lots of rules, which I thought kind of fits the topic of discussion.

This clip needs to be used more often.
