So anyway, the US has been having a problem recently when migrants decided that the illegal immigration crackdown required a modified solution for getting into the US. Voila... asylum! So now the US system for asylum seekers is quite a bit overwhelmed. And even despite draconian methods to make migrants want to leave the US, more keep coming because... well... better opportunities for their family.

So Trump now has modified his direction to. He went into the President Ellipsis playbook and picked out a new solution for problems his administration has run into... tariffs. Yup... tariffs.

article said:
President Donald Trump said Thursday night that the United States would impose a 5 percent tariff on all Mexican goods starting next month, saying the sweeping tariffs would rise monthly to as high as 25 percent "until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory."
Notice that art of the deal dealology? He threatened to raise them even higher if Mexico didn't stop people from other countries from getting to the US border. That is pretty smooooooooth.

I don't know why this seems to be some kind of problem. It's not a problem, it's an opportunity!
Ever since the War of Northern Aggression, the market for slaves has grown bigger and bigger, and the price of slaves has gone up astronomically.
We should be simply gathering up these caravans and selling their components into the open market.

It's not that they just decided. They saw how well the asylum scam has been working in Europe for years.

At least you admit that these bogus asylum seekers are looking for "better opportunities" and are in no way, shape or form legitimate asylum seekers. They should not be let into the country and if they enter, they should be immediately deported. The problem is the Congress. They will not vote for a much needed reform of asylum laws to make gaming the system like this harder.

This is good politics for Trump. I wonder what happened to the proposal to tax remittances. A tariff would likely affect the wealthy in Mexico more than a remittance tax, and would more likely motivate the Mexican government to act.

Of course as I've stated before, the Mexicans will not tolerate their leaders looking weak against Trump. You'd have to really squeeze the wealthy Mexicans, or go with carrot rather than a stick approach where both parties save face. A cynic would say it is better for them to be seen as fighting for more border enforcement rather than actually getting it. Politically, there is little to lose and a lot to gain.
