...just listened to him calling around places he's been today, looking for a camo bag, size of a small purse, two pink knitting needles sticking out 'like antennae.'

NOW he's calling around, trying to find where the cops take things that they take into custody because someone thinks it's a bomb...
 
Oh dear, I hope he finds it.

My mother taught me how to crochet when I was a kid, but I have long since forgotten how to do it.
 
I wouldn't worry about the "bomb," I'd worry about how your son could convince Homeland Security that the long, sharp knitting needles weren't weapons.
