I think the article title basically says it all:

In New Lawsuit, Corporations Band Together to Stop Consumers from Banding Together

They really don't like class action lawsuits holding them accountable for ripping off a large number of people of a little bit each. (Without class action nobody is in a position that it makes economic sense to sue.)

I agree a new irony meter is needed when a person approves of consumers being able to band together to hold businesses accountable for ripping them off but disapproves of workers being able to band together to prevent business from ripping them off.

Eh, I kind of agree but disagree. I find Guilds/Unions to be redundant, the way I see it the US gov should serve this function of protecting citizens from exploitation by any means, whether they be workers or consumers. Unions only came about because of a failure in the government to protect its citizens and are an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy in a society where the government actually protects the interests of the people.

Just don't patronize these businesses.

Then we most likely get yet another bureaucracy.

No, it's the same bureaucracy, but with new laws stipulating that your workers cannot be exploited to the public detriment. The gov already has the same infrastructure as a union and nominally acts as one.

Bureaucracy, as in more red tape and overflowing complaints box with unaddressed problems.

I'm not sure I understand the thrust of your statement. Is having more laws just inherently bad all the time forever with no exceptions?

A succinct statement of the Polish government's attitude toward Solidarity.

Unions arose because businesses were abusive and criminal. They turned children and many other people into slaves. And treated them worse since they were not their property.

The government has always sided with big business over workers.

The government is corrupted by big business.

Unions are a necessary evil to combat the injustice of an evil system.

They served a useful purpose in the past--unions brought about change a lot faster than the ballot box. Most of the good things they do the government has put into law, though--these days we have the cost but very little that truly is of benefit. (Plenty of protecting bad workers, though, and standing in the way of automation.)

Yeah, true...

Except the government continues to suck at it, which explains the need for unions.

Except the unions ALSO suck at it, which, as you point out, makes them unnecessary and redundant.

Drink in the irony on THAT shit.

One of the reasons some unions are not effective is that despite all of the rhetoric from the right, labor law in the US tends to favor the employer.
