No gays exist in Chechnya

Authorities in the Russian republic of Chechnya have launched an anti-gay campaign that has led to authorities rounding up dozens of men suspected of being homosexual, according to the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta and human rights activists. Alvi Karimov, spokesperson for Chechnya’s leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, described the report as “absolute lies and disinformation”, basing his denial on the claim that there were no gay people in Chechnya. “You cannot detain and persecute people who simply do not exist in the republic,” he told Interfax news agency. “I haven’t had a single request on this issue, but if I did, I wouldn’t even consider it,” Kheda Saratova, a Chechen activist who is on Kadyrov’s human rights council, told a Russian radio station. “In our Chechen society, any person who respects our traditions and culture will hunt down this kind of person without any help from authorities, and do everything to make sure that this kind of person does not exist in our society.

Whether the round up is true or not remains to be seen but the response from Chechnya officials is startling to say the least.

I think this is based on a false premiss - other than the Spartans, for instance, the toughest soldiers in classical Greece were in a Theban regiment composed of homosexual couples, and when I was squarebashing in the RAF some of the most macho corporals and sergeants were that way given (dreadful bloody thugs). A lot of military toughies throughout history have been homosexual, as have some very macho yobs like Hitler's SA. You are mixing up style and sexual orientation, surely?

Macho basically means to be the epitome of "maleness" in contrast to (and dominance over) femaleness. So, the concept of macho typically includes demonstrating how sexually dominant one is over females and how virile in one's ability to impregnate any woman one wants. The precludes being homosexual, no matter how physically tough or aggressive. And in fact, it typically would entail being violently homophobic and attacking any suspected homosexuals to demonstrate how much one detests those that do not sexually dominate women.

Are you implying that we shouldn't care about gay rights in the US, because at least they all are not being systematically exterminated? (although plenty are hunted down and assaulted and sometimes killed in the US). Or are you equating the government forcing bakers to bake a gay wedding cake if they ever happened to be asked with the government engaging in genocide against gays.

I can't be certain because interpreting sarcasm is generally pretty difficult for me, but my guess is that he's criticizing people who seem to be more interested in criticizing a US state government that does not force bakers to bake gay wedding cakes (under threat of fines and/or losing their job) instead of the behavior of a much more anti-gay government in a - even more tentative guess - foreign country/Russian Republic/predominantly Muslim jurisdiction.

There are a few things a little mixed up... firstly, Chechnya isn't "in Russia".. it is next to Russia. Russia has been bombing it for some reason... so what it is in the top 10 of is beyond me...
