Nearly 20% of Trump Fans Think Freeing the Slaves Was a Bad Idea

Donald Trump appears to have high levels of support among the nation’s intolerant population, according to a New York Times deep dive into polling data.

The Times found that nearly 20% of Trump supporters did not approve of freeing the slaves, according to a January YouGov/Economist poll that asked respondents if they supported or disapproved of “the executive order that freed all slaves in the states that were in rebellion against the federal government”—Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

FEBRUARY 24, 2016

Do you think they've changed their minds since then?
More that it is old news. News aggregaters and Facebook have a tendency of regurgitating old news. Heck, it was nearly 4 years ago.

Besides, we know now that Trump supporters would generally support the disappearance of the Democrat Party. The remaining GOP'ers would just shrug.

You are such an elitist!

If 20% answered that they are that intolerant then 80% didn't. Look at the silver lining there. The vast majority of Trump supporters are not what people routinely accuse them of being. I do agree with marc though that many have dropped their support for him since he took office, of those left a higher percentage will be horrid.

Only 46% of those who voted in 2016 voted for Donald Trump. But now we have a country that has 100% submitted to his autocratic rule.
That 80% don't like it doesn't matter to those who are "in the loop" (aka co-conspirators in the Trump Junta).

Anti-Semites were marching in Virginia thinking their time had come. There is no silver lining there.

Stupid for supporting Trump?

Based on Trump's polling numbers, it does not appear to be much of a drop in voters for Trump. Sure, they might not like the guy, but they ain't voting for that commie Biden.

Not being willing to go so far as to explicitly say that enslavement of blacks should still exist in the US is a very low bar than even most white supremacists (and therefore Trump supporters) can pass. Such views are on a continuum, not bi-polar. IOW, those numbers mean that another 20%+ are just below that bar and another large % just below that. For example, wishing that the South would have won the civil war is simply a less honest way of wishing that the US was like it was in the slavery south than what it is today. And just a tiny smidge below that is proudly waiving the flag of the enemy government that killed US soldiers and civilians to fighting to preserve slavery or preserve confederate monuments erected mostly by the KKK and white supremacists to show opposition to civil rights for blacks. That's as far as you need to go to include the majority of Trump supporters.

Look at all the people Hitler DIDN't Kill. While 10 million Jews were murdered, the population of the planet in the 1940's was approximately 2.5 billion. This means he only murdered less than 1% of the population.

Look at the silver lining.. approximately 99% that were alive, managed to stay alive.

Uh, no. Venn diagram with other isms. So sexists is another group, maybe 50% overlap. Now up to 30% total of deplorables. Add in homophobes, xenophobes, transphobes, might as well just call truth for Killery's statement.

Great, 80% don't think slavery should still be allowed. Set the bar any lower and it will be underground.

One would think that to any humane person, any percentage above 0% would be horrid enough to not bother with any silver lining.

Well yes, but. Checks....

Right, we're talking about JP here.

Well, AD has some knowledge of what he's talking about, so that might be kinda generous. ;)

You may think it can't get worse. It can. It really really can. And that it hasn't is a silver lining you should be struggling to keep. Failing to recognize that and failing to listen and win these people over, and continuing to further beat the drum of division and us vs them towards people who have voted for Trump, and driving them further into his arms instead of winning them to your side is foolish.

Be careful to attack particular views and not to generalize and attack the voters. Many of them have been brought over and more can be, but not if we generalize them and villify them. That silver lining not only exists; it is your remaining hope.

You should be asking yourselves why and how Trump won. And look beyond lame finger pointing answers like Russia or racism. Why did two time Obama voters vote for Trump? Why did people who didn't vote before do so? Why was he able to stun everyone and beat Clinton, or even come close to doing so?

"Make America Great Again" met by "America's already great" and the Baskets of Deplorables thing sum it up nicely. Ask yourselves why candidates like Bernie and Yang are able to get Trump people to switch over, despite having hard left policies in comparison to the other Democrats.

You can do better, but you have not hit rock bottom yet, but you may if you keep pushing division rather than trying to unite your people and giving them something to believe in instead of something to hate.

Well, we've got the struggling part down. We've got a President that is guilty "as sin" and we can't kick him out of office, even when that doesn't mean a Democrat becomes President.
