NYPD cops fatally shoot bipolar black man holding metal pipe police mistake for gun on Brooklyn street

Photos being released may be cherry-picked. Plenty of people from the neighborhood may have known he was joking or harmless. Here is some independent information.
Plenty of people may have, but others have not, including the police.

Santiago estimated 20 to 30 seconds elapsed from the time police arrived till shots were fired.
"Everything happened so fast," he said. "The officers arrived and somebody said, 'He's got a gun.' Nobody said nothing to him. They just started shooting."
20-30s is plenty of time to issue commands.

Santiago said police were just a few feet from Vassell when they opened fire.
"You could see from a distance that it wasn't a gun," he said. "Why the hell did you have to shoot him ten times?"
Could you really?

Neighborhood resident Bob Dylan, 29, said that Vassell always had the metal rod — which Dylan believes is a showerhead — with him.
“He never had it out, he just kept it on his waist,” Dylan said.
...
Dylan's statements are disproven by the photos. Or maybe he said something different but nobody really knows what Bob Dylan is saying.

So why didn't they?

You are not reading in context, thus your misunderstanding.

Mental hospitals are expensive.

In the United States, so is medicine and he was off his bipolar medicine for a year (allegedly). Without insurance maybe that could be $200/month. Under President Trump, you no longer have to be insured because Freedom.

Why hadn't someone in Trump's gun-toting safe america already shot this guy if he was so much a threat? Isn't that how it works in Trump's gun-toting america? Isn't that how we're all made safer?

So why did cops have to show up and shoot him? Why did it take so long? By Trumpian standards he should have been dead and eliminated a long time ago because obviously he had been engaging in this threatening behavior for a long time?

Apparently I don't understand how Trump's america is supposed to work.

Obviously it is because America has not regained its greatness. If Trump had made America great again, this troubled man would have offed by a dead-eye good Samaritan the minute he became a perceived threat by some snowflake.

I think this is him holding the mystery object. At least we now know the size. And he is holding it like a gun.
He also has a history of 17 arrests for domestic violence, but I do not know how these cases were disposed.

In other words, either totally nuts or this was a suicide by cop.
I am sick of hearing people refer to those suffering from mental illness as being "totally nuts".

This seems to be one of those cases where this guy wasn't receiving enough care. Of course, that care costs a fortune. Go America!

I wouldn't assume that. I haven't read the details of this case. But I can tell you from experience that a great many bi-polar people avoid treatment. Being on a crazy binge is like being on herion. And the pills to treat bi-polar makes patients shaky and blah. It brings them down.

Herion? Isn’t that a fish?

As far as heroin, isn’t that a depressant? Wouldn’t it be more like on acid? Regardless, mental health drugs can have bad lifestyle side effects.

That's what I hear! It also can take a month or longer for a person to get on the right amount of medicine. And if the patient decides to skip one single day during that monthly long "detox" period, they go right back to square one crazy street. It's a bad deal. And it's very hard to get people committed against their will in today's world.
