An intense manhunt was under way Thursday for a young white man who joined a prayer meeting and then opened fire inside a historic black church in downtown Charleston, killing nine people, including the pastor, in what authorities called a hate crime.
The comments at Yahoo are often over the top and hyperbolic, but this article it is really out of touch with reality. There can't be that many trolls.

I was actually shocked this morning when FOXNews reported this story without a negative quip about Obama or Hillary. I'm sure they will have something ready this afternoon.

Charleston Church Shooting: White Gunman Kills 9 At Historic Black Church

Charleston Church Shooting: White Gunman Kills 9 At Historic Black Church

Nine people were shot to death by a white man at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, on Wednesday night -- rocking a nation already grappling with institutional racism and race-related violence.

The gunman entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during a weekly Bible study meeting and opened fire around 9 p.m. Eight people were found dead at the scene, police said. Two others were transported to a hospital, where one later died. Federal, state and city authorities are now all searching for the gunman. The FBI on Thursday morning named the shooter as 21-year-old Dylann Roof, according to the Post and Courier, a Charleston-area paper.

Carson Cowles, Roof's uncle, told Reuters he recognized his nephew in the photograph released by police, and that Roof had received a gun from his father as a 21st birthday gift in April.

“The only reason someone could walk into a church and shoot people praying is out of hate,” said Charleston Mayor Joe Riley at a news conference. “It is the most dastardly act that one could possibly imagine.”

Six women and three men were killed; none of the victims has yet been named by police, but State House Minority leader Todd Rutherford told The Associated Press that the church's pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, was among the dead.

The Department of Justice, FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office are launching a hate crime investigation into the killings.

I beat you by an hour. *does inappropriate celebration dance*

And umm... killed a State Senator. Did the shooter know they were there? Honestly, though, does this need to be handled as a "hate crime"? Killing 9 people, and a State Senator probably will carry a bit of weight with a prosecutor.

The shooting is horrible but there was already overreaction to it on our (Atlanta) local radio. A black morning host, himself a pastor, ranted about "state of emergency" for blacks and that they need to be "warriors", pretty much calling for a race war. Every killing is a tragedy, but black-on-white murders still outnumber white-on-black murders by more than 2:1 according to FBI despite the imbalance in reporting of these murder in the media.

And is this a common rally cry or some individual getting too worked up?

Just as an FYI, this was a mass murder that involved a State Senator. This could have actually been an act of terrorism if the Democrat was the target.

Why Recognizing The Charleston Church Shooting As An Act Of Racially Motivated Terrorism Is Only The First Step
I view hate crime legislation as an attempt to get cases tried that were allowed to slip through the cracks due to intolerance and hatred in the higher levels of local government. If put on trial (as opposed to being killed before taken into custody), there will be due process.

While the shooting occurred in the church, there is still an unknown, was this a hate crime (to kill blacks) or terrorism (to kill a Democrat lawmaker). That is unknown. Hopefully they get this asshat and can find out.

Why Obama Jimmy? The state senator was at a Hillary event that very day - if there was a political (rather than purely racial) motive to this massacre it would be linked to Hillary.

15k comments so far but the ones I skimmed didn't seem bad. Do you have a sample of "really out of touch with reality" comments?

That would depend on his motivations. If it turns out he was doing it because he wanted to kill black people then it's a hate crime and it should be treated as such regardless of how serious the charges would be without that added to it. If it turns out he was doing it because he wanted to kill the Senator as part of a political agenda and just gunned down the rest of the people in the room while he was there, then it's an act of terrorism and it should be treated as such regardless of how serious the charges would be without it. If it turns out that he did it because of a personal grudge with one of the victims and the race and job of the people he killed weren't relevant, then give him the $50 fine and make him promise never to do it again (or whatever the exact punishment for that sort of thing is in South Carolina).

Derec, pray tell what is the proper reaction to 9 people shot dead in a church on a Wednesday night in Charleston?

Everything is linked to Obama when race is involved with the unfortunately not negligible portion of the US population.

If you don't think they are that bad after a quick look over, you don't need to waste any more of your time.

Apparently the shit comments on Yahoo would be.

He has a show on a CBS radio station. He isn't just some guy with a 50W pirate radio station. Furthermore, it's a refrain one hears a lot lately (ever since Trayvon Martin really) - that even though white-on-black murders are relatively rare there is somehow an "open season" on blacks in the US.
Just as an FYI, this was a mass murder that involved a State Senator. This could have actually been an act of terrorism if the Democrat was the target.
I think it's likely terrorism either way. The question is, did the perp even know the pastor was a legislator? If they catch him alive (doubtful), maybe we'll find out what his exact motives were.

All hate crimes are acts of terrorism. The purpose of a hate crime is to instill terror.

That is your assumption backed by nothing at all.

What I have seen in the recent comments is a lot of back and forth on guns and 2nd amendment (standard stuff after any shooting), comments condemning the killings etc. Nothing crazy like saying the pastor had it coming and nothing racist either, but I maybe read 5-6 comments which is why I asked for samples of the crazy shit.

Certainly not churning up some racial animosity from the other side. Racial animosity is what (very likely) led to this crime, we certainly don't need more of it.

Strawman comments about how it's Obama's fault and jibes about FOX news.

So you don't think the killing churns up racial animosity but a talk show host does? And you still didn't answer the question.
