ABC has ruined “The Muppets.” How many parents want to explain the punchline of sexually charged jokes to young children?
Well, I grew up watching Laugh-In, Matt Helm, James Bond, Johnny Carson, SNL... My parents mostly said 'You'll understand one day.'
Dad used to give dates. "On your 18th birthday, at 1830 hours, enlightenment will descend upon you and you will speak perfect innuendo." Of course, I had already picked up that specific joke's meaning way before then.
I tend to agree with George Carlin. He was on stage with several other comedians. Guys who, when they were young, were stealing smokes, ducking cops, sneaking drinks, peeping toms... Doing everything they could to reach maturity as fast as possible, well ahead of schedule. Now they grow up and the responsible line is 'we have to protect the kids.'
The kids don't want to be protected. It's much more fun to get away with things the adults don't want you doing, seeing, smoking, mixing or launching up over the power lines than to be entertained in wholesome ways....
