My first memory of Percy Sledge comes from sometime around 1968, or so. I was 12 and my family lived in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Vicksburg was a strangely cosmopolitan town in those days, because the major employer was the Corp of Engineers Experiment Station. This brought researchers and their families from all over the world. That's why we were there. Percy Sledge performed at some club and the Vicksburg Evening Post printed one of his publicity photos, with the caption, "Percy Sledge, Soul Singer." It was unusual thing in those days, when people in other parts of the south were burning Beatle records.
Percy Sledge lived in Baton Rouge, most of his life. In his later years, most of his performances were for local benefits. He was kind man and a fine gentleman.
