Prince Philip has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace announces

QE2 may want to keep on going, but some other monarchs have abdicated as a way of retiring.

From  Abdication,
In recent decades, the monarchs or leaders of the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Qatar, Cambodia, Bhutan and Japan have abdicated as a result of old age. In the Netherlands, the last three monarchs Wilhelmina, Juliana, and Beatrix have all abdicated. In all three instances, this was done to pass the throne to the heir sooner.
Wikipedia has a big  List of monarchs who abdicated though some were forced to abdicate.

QE2 is not only monarch of the United Kingdom, but also monarch of several British Commonwealth nations. But several others have cut their ties to the British monarchy. The dates:
  • 1783 - United States (successful rebellion, was never in the Commonwealth)
  • 1949 - Ireland
  • 1950 - India
  • 1956 - Pakistan
  • 1960 - Ghana
  • 1961 - South Africa
  • 1962 - Tanganyika (with Zanzibar formed Tanzania in 1964)
  • 1963 - Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda
  • 1970 - Rhodesia (renamed Zimbabwe in 1979)
  • 1971 - Gambia, Guyana, Sierra Leone
  • 1972 - Ceylon (renamed Sri Lanka that year)
  • 1974 - Malta
  • 1976 - Trinidad & Tobago
  • 1987 - Fiji
  • 1992 - Mauritius
  • 2021 - Barbados (planned for 2021 Nov)
  • (still have the UK monarch as their HoS) - Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu
Who might be next?

I'll classify them geographically and ethnically to try to get some clues.
  • Large Anglo: 1783 United States, (still in) Canada, Australia, New Zealand
  • Europe: 1949 Ireland, 1974 Malta
  • South Asia: 1950 India, 1956 Pakistan, 1972 Ceylon (Sri Lanka)
  • Oceania: 1987 Fiji, (still in) Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu
  • Africa: 1960 Ghana, 1961 South Africa, 1962 Tanganyika (Tanzania), 1963 Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, 1970 Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), 1971 Gambia, Sierra Leone, 1992 Mauritius
  • North America:1783 United States, (still in) Canada
  • Caribbean: 1976 Trinidad & Tobago, 2021 Barbados, (still in) Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines
  • Central & South America: 1971 Guyana, (still in) Belize
Not a lot of patterns to be found.
