In my search for more historic books I had a few people from a history forum recommend taking a look at Project Gutenberg.

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to "encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks". It was founded in 1971 by Michael S. Hart and is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The project tries to make these as free as possible, in long-lasting, open formats that can be used on almost any computer. As of 3 October 2015, Project Gutenberg reached 50,000 items in its collection.

Have been doing some searching on 'Canada' today and have found a huge number of classic historical texts that'd cost me hundreds of dollars if I found them in hard form. So it looks like the project likely offers a wealth of good stuff.

Enjoy!

If I'd known you weren't aware of this resource, I'd pointed it out long ago. Gold mine.

I'm currently reading "Two years before the mast", DL from Gutenberg.

Another good one is https://archive.org.

Thanks for the link.

Have known about it for some time now, but just started to download recently.

My real task these days is actually finishing books before I get my hands on 5 more.

For classical musicians, like myself, there is a similar website that contains open source sheet music. It is imslp.org. That is, the International Music Score Library Project. It's a great source.

If you want to listen to open source classical music, go to classiccat.net.

Librivox.org takes public domain works, largely from Project Gutenberg, and uses volunteers to record them as audio books, free for the download for those who prefer to listen to their reading material.
