Commenters allegedly on the conservative Fox News site used the "n-word" to describe 17-year-old Malia Obama. No racial epithet seemed to be spared and one commenter even wished that she'd get cancer or AIDS "or one of those colored diseases."

Well, there's one good thing in all of this.

I'm reading The Residence, which includes interviews with current and retired staff of the White House. People who watched the presidents and their families behind the scenes. At one point, there's a recollection of Nixon's daughter during the Watergate scandal, wondering aloud how those people could say such nasty things about her daddy.

I'd say the chances are good that Malia's lived in America long enough that none of this fuckwittery, aimed at her or her father, is really coming as a surprise to her.


Well, maybe 'good thing' is hyperbole. Less deplorable than it might be?
