The obvious difference between Trump supporters and others is religion. It dominates US politics. I think it prevents us from seriously debating the issues. If you have god in your side, you can’t be wrong and debate is cut off. We can’t have universal healthcare because god doesn’t approve. Same with taxes on billionaires.

It’s why I argue that Christianity is fundamentally an evil religion hell bent on domination and control of us and the ultimate destruction of our liberties. After all they have god on their side.

I see us at an inflection point in history. The nones are a growing group that they actually threaten the future of Christianity. Christians are reacting in an authoritarian way. When the vast majority were Christians, they could safely debate other issues as all were on the ultimate side of god. Not anymore. The question is whether the growth of the nones will continue unabated or whether the Christians will enable a takeover of the state sufficient to force people back.

What do you think of Islam?
I know your question was for SLD. But I think all religions are delusional and thus can cause people to do horrible things.
Islam being the last major religion to be created has had a violent history.
It's telling that they all grew out of misery and strife.

Agreed. They are all looney. You don't consider Mormonism to be a major religion?

What has been repeated multiple times but you keep ignoring it. Also you can probably guess it from the fucking thread title.

Yes, don't remind me, please.

Is-lame is a small minority, (in the US). Fairly tame, (in the US). So not a problem (yet).
But other than that, is-lame is the worst religion on earth. Worse than scientology.

Yes Tswizzle, no one here has ever, ever mentioned that they are against all Abrahamic faiths before. No one whatsoever. It has never happened, not even repeatedly.

What are you on about?

He who can be made to believe in absurdities can be made to commit atrocities.

Islam, at present, isn’t a threat to the United States. It’s really an insignificant percentage of Americans. For that reason, most Muslims are strict separationists. If it were ever to attain a majority in the country, it probably would be a threat to liberty.

Well, if we're counting new sects of old religions, there's always Protestantism.

Christianity is bleeding believers at one percent a year. In fifty years Christians will be such a small minority they'll have rediscovered the virtues of separation of church and state. It's an old, spent, slowly dying religion.

He who can be made to believe in absurdities can be made to commit atrocities.
Bingo. That's why we need to be talking about the people who made you to believe we don't tax billionaires.

The people spreading the "billionaires don't pay taxes" absurdity and the rest of the absurd beliefs in that whole meme complex are a significant percentage of Americans, and their faith is equally hell bent on domination and control of us, but their faith isn't old and spent. And not one of them in a hundred is a strict separationist.

Now in regard to your hypothetical about a Muslim majority (assuming you meant over 50% of the population, otherwise ignore this paragraph), based on your previously expressed views you would say that there would be no (or more realistically severely limited) freedoms in the population, and "naturally" the majority of the population would agree with such restrictions. But in that case Islam would not be a threat to liberty in the USA, in the same sense that if say someone shot you dead you would no longer be at risk of being shot dead.

However, I don't believe Islam could ever become a majority (either 50+%, or a large proportion, say greater than 10%) in the USA, especially since religiosity is dying slowly.
Even if it did then it is unlikely to be the radical sort (which presumably the US government would take preemptive action action against, mainly through legal processes, and if necessary by force) but more moderate form that is no more dangerous (and probably less so) than many current Christian organizations and individuals. But such growth is extremely unlikely, and so nothing to be concerned about.

I think Islam will be Americanized. Just as other religions have. Catholics were once viewed as a threat.

My point about billionaires is not that they should or shouldn’t be taxed, or at what rate, but that the right has co-opted religion so that they can effectively cut off debate. God is on the side of billionaires. How dare you say billionaires should have to pay more taxes! God does not approve! Same with abortion rights and a host of other rights.

"Christianity is bleeding believers at one percent a year." OK, irrelevant to whether or not they have power right now and are doing harm right now.

This is just silly.

You think it’s silly that the rich and powerful would use religion to preserve their interests? Seriously?

That's not what I think and that's certainly not what I said was silly.

I'd say this is kind of just throwing everything out with the water, including the tub. "Evangelical Christianity" has proven to be nothing more than the uglier sides of organized religion. But all of Christianity? Come on, that is an absurd broad brush.
I see us at an inflection point in history.
We might be at an inflection point, but it isn't Christianity that is the issue, it is the evangelical Christians that helped raise Trump to power because he represents the ugliest sides of Yahweh in the Tanakh.
The nones are a growing group that they actually threaten the future of Christianity. Christians are reacting in an authoritarian way.
Conservative Christians are. They want life to prior to 1950s. Women in the home, those people to be quiet. Meanwhile the Libertarians want things back to the late 19th century, back before the 14th Amendment was applied to states and Executive Branch regulations didn't exist.
When the vast majority were Christians, they could safely debate other issues as all were on the ultimate side of god. Not anymore. The question is whether the growth of the nones will continue unabated or whether the Christians will enable a takeover of the state sufficient to force people back.
Christians voted about 60 - 40 for Trump. White Voters 57 - 42 for Trump. If we are going to toss Christians out, probably need to through the whites out with the water too?
