There was nothing stopping Kipling from being a hack in England. It's not as if he was convicted of something and sent to Australia.

He did make exceedingly good cakes.

He also made exceedingly good inspiration. Just wanted to put in a plug for Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book.
