Man Who Threatened to ‘Put a Bullet’ in Rep. Omar Pleads Guilty - The New York Times
“Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood?” Patrick W. Carlineo Jr. asked a member of Ms. Omar’s staff on that call, according to a criminal complaint. “Why are you working for her, she’s a [expletive] terrorist. Somebody ought to put a bullet in her skull. Back in the day, our forefathers would have put a bullet in her [expletive].”

“I’ll put a bullet in her [expletive] skull,” the staff member also recalled Mr. Carlineo, 55, saying, according to the complaint.
Rep. Ilhan Omar asks for 'compassion' in sentencing of Islamaphobic man who threatened to kill her - The Washington Post
He told investigators that he was a President Trump-loving patriot who “hates radical Muslims” in the government, according to the document.

Carlineo told FBI agents that he had a shotgun and a .22 caliber firearm at his home that he claimed belonged to his girlfriend but later admitted to belonged to him, according to the complaint.

We must apply a system of compassion to criminal justice.
Who are we as a nation if we respond to threats of political retribution with retribution ourselves? https://t.co/s96jjh8AlD" / Twitter

I thought of

Matthew 5:38-47 (New English Translation)
Retaliation
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, do not resist the evildoer. But whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well. 40 And if someone wants to sue you and to take your tunic, give him your coat also. 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not reject the one who wants to borrow from you.

Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’ and ‘hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be like your Father in heaven, since he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors do the same, don’t they? 47 And if you only greet your brothers, what more do you do? Even the Gentiles do the same, don’t they? 48 So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

But IO has the good sense not to go to that extreme. After noting his nastiness,
But we must ask: who are we as a nation if we respond to threats of political retribution with retribution ourselves?

The answer to hate is not more hate, it is compassion. Punishing the defendant with a lengthy prison sentence or a burdensome financial fine would not rehabilitate him. It would not repair the harm he has caused. It would increase his anger and resentment.

A punitive approach to criminal justice will not stop criminals like Mr. Carlineo from committing a crime again or prevent others from committing similar acts. Only restorative justice can do that. He should understand the consequences of his actions, be given the opportunity to make amends and seek redemption.
That led me to track down  Restorative justice, Restorative Justice

From the second link,
Restorative justice repairs the harm caused by crime. When victims, offenders and community members meet to decide how to do that, the results can be transformational.

It emphasizes accountability, making amends, and — if they are interested — facilitated meetings between victims, offenders, and other persons.
At least it gets the criminal to accept guilt. Loving one's enemies and turning the other cheek doesn't.

I'm also reminded of this, which Jesus Christ is described as saying to his executioners:
Luke 23:34
But Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
