'many' means not all, and 'beginning to back off' acknowledges how much they did support him for quite a while.
But he tends to act without thinking there will be negative consequences. So it is still possible he thought he could shoot someone on 5th avenue secure the Jewish vote, and the Alt Right would still vote for him.
Especially after his racist comments to the Jewish group a short time back.
