For those unfamiliar with the above names, as we all are, Ms. Ozturk(she is a student at Tufts University) was in the news recently, everyone might have seen the videos of her being approached by ICE agents, handcuffed and being detained. Her crime? Speaking out for the Palestinian cause - she is being accused of supporting Hamas
I am a supporter of Israel, but if all she was doing was speaking out for the Palestinians, then she has done nothing wrong
Free speech is the bedrock of a democracy - she has a right to speak up
.
Then today, I catch a MSNBC segment where the second person in my post - Mr. Claude Jr - was being interviewed. He is a Professor at Princeton University.
Mr Claude Jr echoed my thoughts - he spoke up for beliefs, freedom, diversity, free speech etc
.
But what bothers me is that the vast majority of Muslims and Christians belong to religions that speak a Dictator's language - "Only our way or the highway"
Ran into a couple of proselytizers the day before (one was African-American) and the delighted way they spoke of a SEGREAGED Heaven - only if you follow Jesus - and their willingness to condemn billions of people to hell - Atheists, Hindus, Buddhists - for not sharing their beliefs, views! I kept asking in disbelief - entire families, women, children, even babies? And they kept nodding happily!
We are ALL Sinners, so what we do in life does not matter, morals, values do not matter, all that matters is which God we pray to
Only those who pray to the "right" God, theirs of course, are allowed into Heaven, the rest condemned to hell
.
What amazes me is how a person can speak up for human rights, freedoms, free speech and beliefs and yet embrace a religion that promotes the very opposite!
Segregated establishments were ubiquitous a century ago here in the US - we all agree that they were evil, wrong
But the very same people abused & hurt by such ideas are now willing to push the very same ideas!
What changed? Well, from being an abused MINORITY, they are now the MAJORITY, with the ability to dish out abuse of their own
.
