Syria antiaircraft fire downed a Russian military plane after an Israeli attack on Syrian positions, killing 15 people on board, Moscow said.

Russian state media said Syrian missiles shot the maritime patrol aircraft down amid an attack by Israeli jets in the Latakia region of northwest Syria.
Moscow blamed Israel for putting its aircraft in the line of fire and said it had only a minute's notice of the strike.

"As a result of the irresponsible actions of the Israeli military, 15 Russian servicemen were killed, which is absolutely not in keeping with the spirit of Russian-Israeli partnership," said Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, spokesperson for the Russian military, according to RIA-Novosti.

In a rare acknowledgment of its military activity in the region, Israel expressed "sorrow" for the loss of Russian life, but blamed the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad. The Israeli Defense Forces said it had followed well-established protocols in communicating with Moscow, which are intended to prevent such incidents.

It may be a little early to exhonerate Dump Truck. We are in this weird position where Putin's bitch boy is going to have to back Russia at the same time as he is forced due to his need to pander to his base to support Israel. I am interested to see which direction he breaks towards, since we are Israel's arms dealer, and if we end that relationship, Israel will be at a severe disadvantage in any such conflict.

Especially when the plane the Russians shot down was full of AIDS researchers who represented one of the world's best hopes at ending one of the world's worst plagues, and the one the Israelis shot down was filled with soldiers who themselves were a plague on the region. Though lets be fair, it is a little Tu Qoque; just because Russia committed a war crime and made the whole world an objectively shitty place doesn't justify the killing of those soldiers. Rather, their activity in supporting the Assad regime justified it.

Nobody's even claiming the Israelis shot down the plane. There's no question the missile came off a Syrian launcher.

What Russia is saying is that Israel deliberately attacked from where the plane was to use it as cover but that doesn't stand up to scrutiny--there's no way Israel could have planned that because they didn't know what the plane would do.

Why in the world should they call off their attack because of an irrelevant airplane? They knew it wasn't hostile, they weren't going to shoot at it. It's not their fault if some Syrian air defense guy was an idiot.
