Russia has canceled a popular high school exchange program with the U.S. after a gay Russian student requested asylum based on his sexual orientation.

As The New York Times is reporting, officials announced that Russia would no longer allow students to participate in a year-long U.S. academic program under the annual Future Leaders Exchange (or FLEX), and accused the U.S. of endangering the welfare of a child over the case.

The unnamed student, 16, was reportedly living with an American family in Michigan when he befriended a local gay couple, according to the Washington Post. Russian diplomats said the couple, who are military veterans, told the teen that he should stay in the U.S. and even promised to pay his tuition at Harvard University, according to reports.

U.S. Ambassador John F. Tefft said in a statement to the Associated Press that he "deeply regret this decision by the Russian government to end a program that for 21 years has built deep and strong connections between the people of Russia and the United States."

Russia's controversial "gay propaganda" laws garnered global attention in the weeks leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. A new documentary, "Hunted: The War On Gays In Russia," will premiere on HBO this week.

So they hate gays, think they are evil, and don't want them to exist. Yet, they don't want them to leave and not even to go to live and corrupt their enemies, because this would rob them of their ability to torture and harm these people for their immorality.

At least fascists in the US are willing to deport those they find morally corrupting.

USA!! USA!! USA!!!

You'd think they wouldn't mind getting rid of their gays.

The political purpose of having a minority for the masses to hate is undermined if that minority is simply allowed to flee abroad.

I would imagine they think this teen was converted to gayness

No, its joke that paints homophobes in the US as slightly better than those in Russia, at least if you assume that kicking someone out is better than imprisoning them.
Why would it bother you to merely acknowledge that the US (especially the Republican party) is also host to many fascist homophobes, even when it is done in the context of highlighting that Russia's homophobes are even more dangerous and absurd?

I had a thought here--I don't think this is about gayness.

Rather, it's an excuse to do something to the US and blame us for it. Same thing as Moscow kicking out McDonalds over supposed food safety issues.

It is a couple of months old story. But it was reported a bit different in Russia. They said he was living with a gay couple family in US and it was not specified that he was gay himself. Also they said agreement states that nobody makes attempts to keep kids.
Frankly, I want to know what parents think.
There is a bit of hysteria in Russia over russia to US adoption, kids getting adopted and then murdered in US.

With all due respect, McDonalds should be kicked out of US too :)
