Sandra Bland Family Settles Wrongful Death Lawsuit

 
 
 
This just encourages frivolous lawsuits against our valiant, infallible force in blue.
 
1.9 million dollars because Sandra Bland killed herself? WTF!
That county should have fought that lawsuit tooth and nail. And then sued the Blands for legal fees.

How is it the police's fault that Sandra Bland killed herself when her friends and family did not bail her out?

When people with psychological problems are not given their medication and monitored closely they can become suicidal when under the stress of being wrongfully arrested and thrown in a cell.

The officer that arrested her was convicted of perjury. He had no reasonable basis to arrest her or ask her to leave the vehicle.

Police acting like petty dictators that are above the law is the problem. Not their victims.

I find it utterly fascinating that someone who thinks that BLM protesters should be liable for any inconvienence their protest generates cannot understand why the police who wrongly arrested a black woman and then denied her medication and did not properly watch her while in custody is somehow not responsible for her suicide.
 
I hope if I die because of someone else's stupidity, my family gets a lot more money than that.
 
From what I read the settlement is mostly because the cops weren't watching her as closely as they should have.

Her lack of medication was a negligible issue. If one dosage is sufficient to make someone kill themselves if they miss it, they were already on their way to check out.

Actually it was at least three days without the medication. She was arrested on the 10th of July and was found dead on the 13th, and we don't know how long before her arrest she took her last dose. The medication she was on was very powerful and dangerous to stop suddenly due to detrimental emotional effects of cutting off the med. Add to that the stress of being unjustly jailed could easily throw someone into a suicidal spiral.

It's not one missed dose.

And psych drugs tend to have nasty side effects (including sometimes suicide) when suddenly withdrawn.

Because they're the ones who denied her her medication and then failed to monitor her properly.

It doesn't matter who asked first. What are you, 3?

Obviously, you either think it's 0$ or some amount other than $0. So you have an opinion that you think is informed. Since YOU are the one going up against the justice system, including the courts, a jury, etc who had reasoning (documented) for that amount, it is up to YOU, to argue against it. Be aware that extraordinary claims will require extraordinary evidence. So stop beating around the bush and say what your opinion is and provide the extraordinary evidence for it.

True, but that just supports the idea that she was already considering suicide.

If her medication was that strong, and required, I think we can all expect that she'd taken her meds on the 10th, so it was maybe 2 days without.

I have no problem with the settlement--I see it as a matter of medical malpractice.

I don't think the cop was out of line arresting her but the jail was very out of line in denying her her medication. The sudden withdrawal of many psych medicines can leave one suicidal. The jail is responsible for that.

If standing between someone and their medicine causes them to die it's manslaughter in my book.
