Say Goodbye To Your Local TV And Radio Stations

And thus you're fighting a battle that is already lost.

So when a lunatic with a stockpile of weapons shot hundreds of people in your town, the local media should have played no role. Just kept playing music or reporting on the latest Hollywood gossip.

Got it.

What you're missing is that the stations already had no meaningful local presence. All that this is doing is removing the requirement to maintain an illusion.

If they're maintaining an illusion, they're violating the law. Because some people speed, do you think speed limits should be done away with.

That's a cop out. What you're saying (or seem to be saying) is that the stations should have no local presence. A station licensed to Las Vegas should have no local presence, no responsibility to the Las Vegas community, and beyond keeping the tower lights on need have nothing to do with Las Vegas. If an Amber alert or EAS notification is sent out, the owners of the stations in Vegas should be free to say "fuck Las Vegas, we have no obligation to them."

1) Whether they are local or not has nothing to do with whether they can broadcast such alerts. Those alerts are basically automated, there's no reason the notification can't go to a distant station control.

2) I don't think such things are that important anymore--these days our phones provide them and we are more likely to be in proximity to our phone than listening to a local broadcast.

3) Requiring a local presence doesn't require local news-reporting capability and it's the latter that you are complaining about.
