Student's prom proposal bombs, results in suspension

A La Center High senior was suspended from school Wednesday for strapping a fake bomb around his waist in a stunt to ask a girl to prom.

The situation caused a short-lived scare among administrators until they confirmed the prop wasn’t a real weapon and the student, Ibrahim Ahmad, was not making threats. Nonetheless, the stunt landed Ahmad with a five-day suspension that will keep him from going to the school’s prom on Saturday night.

Racism seems to have played a part in the school's decision:

“It was really unfair, and it kind of felt racist,” Ahmad said. “If anyone else did that, I feel like no one else would have gotten in trouble for it.”

Really? Nobody else would have gotten into trouble for bringing a fake bomb to school? They've suspended kids for fake knives, FFS.

I'd tack on a couple more weeks suspension for being a moron. It's not like education is going to be able to help this guy anyways.

In cased anyone missed it, note dismal's sub-text commentary implied by his thread title with "cultural display" being equated with a fake bomb.

It is interesting to wonder whether this kid chose the fake bomb precisely because he is Arab (I assume) as some sort of joke/political commentary, or maybe so he could claim racism when he predictably got in trouble for it.

Though I suspect dismal's point is more that such bomb's are in fact part of Arab culture.

Regardless, a fake bomb at school will get a suspension these days, no matter your ethnicity.

I heard about the story, but thought it was some white kid. Regardless, five day suspension seems high, but he needs a severe talk down of "What the fuck is wrong with you?!"

I mean seriously, is that supposed to impress someone to go out with you? Reminiscing about it with your children about how Dad put on a fake bomb to ask her to prom.

There is just a bucket load of fail in there.

The kid says he chose the bomb as a reflection of his Middle Eastern heritage.

I'm wondering if it wouldn't have been a big deal if he wrote the message legibly, so people could tell what it actually said without looking over and over... and oh my god, he has a bomb!!! I know what it is supposed to say, but I still can't make it out.

Actually he said "I’m Middle Eastern, and I thought the bomb was kind of funny and clever." Maybe 1 part clever, 0 parts funny, 99 parts WTF?! is going through your mind.

No kidding. I still can't figure out where exactly "the bomb!" fits into the flow. Or does it even?

Maybe he was trying to one-up this guy.
Traffic stop turns into ‘promposal’ with help from IMPD
Huh? She was probably so happy that she wasn't getting a ticket and arrested for the five pounds of marijuana in the trunk that she would have said yes to marriage or just given him her car.

Apparently he thinks he is "the bomb", and thus wore the fake bomb. Of course the best way to ask someone out is to show them exactly how full of yourself you are, not to mention showing them how little common sense you have by wearing a fake bomb to school.

Absolutely. If a girl had done this, nothing would have been said.

Where I live, it would not matter who came to school with any sort of weapon - the reaction would be the same.

For some people, yeah. If they're looking for someone confident who bucks convention, then being full of yourself and doing something stupid works like a charm. At university there were several attempts to steal boats at night, break into graveyards, parks, or factories, and at least one where we ended up on the sloped tiled roof. All of them attempts to get into someone else's pants. Some were even successful.

The point is not that people are impressed by boat theft or flat roofs. The point is that people are willing to do something dangerous and out of character to spend time in your company.

I think he's trying to say that he is "da bomb". No, he's duh-dumb. And I am absolutely fine with the five day suspension. If I was the school administrator, I might have given him much more. He's lucky he isn't in jail.

What is interesting, is she did say yes. Granted, she may have said yes to a simple query.
