sense8 - the future of TV shows, how they are made and funded

i really liked sense8 - but it was the Wachowski sibs and J. Michael Straczynski (the babylon5 guy), so i pretty much had to like it. does anyone know how shows like this get funded vs. commercial advertising? is it more or less profitable?

I thought, for the most part, Netflix footed the bill in order to have it as exclusive content.
