To me, soul is music, as in James Brown's line, "if you didn't have soul, I know you wouldn't be in here".I do find music to be very uplifting. I listen to soul music most of the time, but I also love jazz and listen to classical pieces every night as I drift off to sleep. Can music be spiritually uplifting? Visual art and poetry do nothing for me these days. Nature is the most impressive art. I don't think humans can replicate it. Life without music would be dreary.
Going off topic a bit........
I'm not sure why you mentioned the pain scale in correlation with spirituality, but as a former nurse I found it to be one of the most frustrating, inadequate tools in my profession. All of my patients would tell me that their pain was a 10, and was only reduced to a 9 by their medications. My worst pain was from the rattle snake that bit me in 1975, intensely excruciating. If I had to compare my current pain to that pain, my current pain would always be a low number. It's true that the perception of pain varies greatly in individuals, but I'd prefer just describing my pain and how it limits me, instead of giving it a number. I think the misuse of the pain scale is partly to blame for the over use of opioids.
If you want to experience the spirit try Mahalia Jackson. Down home gut wrenching black gospel music.
I think I was forced to listen to her during my Christian upbringing. I have no desire to listen to gospel. ( I think I must have heard her sing "His Eye is on the Sparrow" hundreds of times. ) I know that soul music was deeply inspired by gospel but it's mostly secular, while a bit "spiritually" uplifting. Among the numerous soul artists that I love, Earth Wind and Fire are probably one of the most spiritual groups. Or course Aretha did some very spiritual stuff, and like many great soul artists she sang gospel in the church before she became a star. All Green was very soulful along with Stevie Wonder, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, etc. Wait. And if you want some extremely sexy soulful music, try Millie Jackson, Latimore, or Luther Van Dross for starters. I would discuss the soul artists in the appropriate place, but I always get the impression that I'm one of very few atheists who appreciate soul music. Old school soul that is.....
Oooh, and then there's the blues. Could anything be more soulful than BB King singing Ghetto Woman? Okay. I'll stop. I'm just trying to give examples of music that could be described as spiritual or soulful. Beethoven's 9th could do it too for that matter.......or Debussy, "Prelude to the Afternoon of the Fawn".....It's all good. I almost forgot about Italian opera. It's not the words so much, but Puccini's music is very spiritual if you don't know Italian.
