Sprout Pharmaceutical's widely touted "Viagra for women." Should it win support from the committee, flibanserin could be the first FDA-approved treatment for female sexual dysfunction. The FDA usually, but does not always, follow the advice of its committees.

"Our greatest pride would be that we've answered an important need for patients," said Cindy Whitehead, CEO of Sprout Pharmaceuticals. "Women still don't have a single medical treatment for this condition and if this could open a pipeline for other treatment options it would be a great achievement."

Flibanserin is Sprout's answer to the most common form of female sexual dysfunction, hypoactive sexual desire disorder. The disorder is defined as a persistent biological lack of desire for sex that causes distress and affects 1 in 10 women.

Why this drug will turn our angels into centerfolds....

Oh, it's a medical condition. I thought not wanting sex was just something that happened to women when they started dating me.

Turns out I just dated a lot within that 10%.

Sounds like a less effective version of the Funky Cold Medina.

NPR covered this. Seems like the jury is still out about whether this drug actually treats anything. There seems little doubt that the side effects are worse than any alleged benefit.

You got to keepem satisfied.

There is indeed a need for this kind of drug for both men and women. Research on this goes back about 8000 years, give or take a century.

I don't see any reason to call this drug "Viagra for women." Viagra and it's brother ED drugs do not induce desire. Viagra makes it possible to act upon desire, but is of little use for a man who does not want to have sex, whether he has an available partner, or not.

This is the first time I have seen the term hypoactive sexual desire disorder. I imagine this is difficult to diagnose, since the same symptoms could be caused by so many environmental disorders. I had a partners in a past relationship who suffered from severe mood swings. There would be periods of wild sex, followed by times of lethargy and no interest. This greatly affected the quality of her life and our life together. When she took medication to even out the cycle, there was no more mania followed by a depressive crash. There was very little interest in sex, also. Loss of sexual desire is one of the most common side effects of all psychotropic drugs.

"Doctor, my wife has lost all sexual desire. Is there something you can give her?"
No, but have you considered losing 180 pounds and bathing once a day?

If this drug actually works, it will be a boon to mankind, and certainly womankind as well. This will produce a groundswell of demand for a similar pill for men, which dissolves quickly in beer.

As far as promoting desire goes, any placebo that dissolves quickly in beer and doesn't affect the taste should work just fine...

That has been the mechanism of all aphrodisiacs for the past 8000 years. It would be nice to have something which actually works.

Apparently in the trial the placebo works pretty well too but not quite as well as the drug.

The women receiving flibanserin reported that the average number of times they had “satisfying sexual events” rose from 2.8 to 4.5 times a month. However, women receiving placebo reported also an increase of “satisfying sexual events” from 2.7 to 3.7 times a month.

Too late. It was approved.

"I am elated, very happy to hear this," Dr. Margery Gass, a sexual dysfunction expert at Cleveland Clinic, said after Thursday's vote. "I think women are going to be very appreciative of having something they can try for this problem."

Men, continue to talk about women's sex drive and how this drug is not needed. Who knows, maybe a woman will show up in this thread.

Well, based on my experience, sex for a woman pretty much involves lying there crying quietly for about thirty seconds until the man is done and he rolls over to fall asleep.

I'm not really sure that you need some kind of pill to help with that.

For me it tends to be a long ordeal where the sex monsters won't let you fall asleep but want another hour of pleasure or long detailed sexxxy stories.
